MCIB Investigation: Trawl door in wrong position causes serious injury

The Irish Marine Casualty Investigation Board published its reports regarding a serious injury onboard on the fishing vessel FV Marliona, while alongside Greencastle Harbour, Co Donegal, on 3 February 2021. At approximately 14.00 hrs the Skipper (Casualty) and crew were working the fishing gear onboard the vessel for the day and were getting the gear ready for the next voyage to sea. Quick Action of Crew Member Saved Fishing Skipper’s Life

The quick action of a crew member on a Donegal fishing vessel probably saved the life of his skipper when his arm was trapped by a trawl door, an investigation has found. The Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) report into the incident involving the whitefish trawler F/V Marliona has noted that the trawl door was not secured adequately and that it was in the wrong position. Coroner concludes fisherman’s death involving trawl door was ‘unfortunate accident’ that was ‘preventable’

A verdict of accidental death was recorded after a 51-year-old fisherman on board a vessel in West Cork lost his life following an accident involving a trawler door. Olounfumi Eugene McCauley, who was originally from Sierra Leone but was living in Gran Canaria, passed away from injuries he incurred following an accident on the Novo Alborada fishing vessel in Castletownbere in West on June 24, 2018.,,, A lifting operation was in place to bring a trawler door on to the vessel.
