Pollution fears after ‘oily sheen’ spotted around stranded fishing vessel

A full scale rescue operation was launched early yesterday after the Oban-registered Colleira ran aground at the Vee Skerries, near Papa Stour. Fifteen crewmen were winched to safety after the alarm was raised at around 1.30am yesterday. Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel crew retrieves stranded fishing vessel off Nantucket Coast

The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel towed an 84-foot commercial fishing vessel Friday with seven people aboard after the vessel became disabled 100 miles off the coast of Nantucket. Crewmembers aboard the fishing vessel Discovery, homeported in New Bedford, contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern’s command center at approximately 2:30 a.m. Friday reporting they had a disabled rudder and needed assistance. Sector Southeastern watchstanders issued a marine safety information broadcast at about 3 a.m. requesting nearby fishermen to assist. The request went unanswered by the other fishing vessels in the area. At approximately 3:30 a.m., the Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel crew diverted to assist. Link 15:01

The New England groundfish debacle (Part III): who or what is at fault? Nils E. Stolpe/FishNet

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
