Merrill “Mike” Kimball, 70, of Yarmouth, shot and killed Leon Kelley, 63, outside Brown’s Bee Farm off Greely Road on Sunday afternoon, say Maine State Police. There were reports of shoving just before the shooting, though police would not confirm those reports. more@portlandpress  23:31

Alaska’s Salmon Fisheries are One Step Closer to MSC Certification

Another step has been taken towards getting Alaska’s commercial salmon fisheries recertified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council. Last fall the MSC sustainability certification of Alaska’s commercial salmon fisheries was allowed to lapse after most of the major seafood processors that operate in the state pulled their support. However, the Purse Seine Vessel Owners Association stepped up to serve as the client for getting the fisheries recertified. more@kdlg 20:52

Lifting the Ban: After 20 years, Georges Bank clam beds reopen

The National Marine Fisheries Service banned dragging for clams and other molluscan shellfish in Georges Bank in 1990, when state and federal officials found a spike in toxins that cause paralytic shellfish poisoning, which can be lethal. Fifteen years later, the agency barred clamming in an additional 15,000 square miles of seabed between much of the Massachusetts coast and Georges Bank when a massive bloom of single-celled algae that carries the toxins extended from northern Maine to Nantucket. more@bostonglobe  13:15
