Yarmouth herring seiner grounded off Isle Haute

Lady MellisaA quiet island in the Bay of Fundy saw much more activity than usual July 20, as a large fishing vessel became grounded near its shores. The Lady Melissa, a 368-tonne herring seiner from Yarmouth, was one of several vessels on a mission to explore the abundant herring supply near Advocate, but became beached on a gravel bar off Isle Haute shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday. Read more here 21:09

Sockeye draft recovery plan for Snake River sockeye salmon shows just how far away success is

NOAA Fisheries NMFS has proposed a recovery goal for Idaho Snake River sockeye salmon of 2,500 natural origin spawners in the lakes of the Sawtooth Valley. P.E.I. Great White caught more than 30 years ago named one of the world’s top five legendary, by Discovery Channel

The shark caught off western P.E.I. , who has since died, was 5.2 metres long. It got caught in McKendrick’s net, and was dead when he pulled it to the surface. In 2010 Governor Deval Patrick announced the building of the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal costing 35 million. The terminal is being built as an ocean wind turbine port today at a price of 100 million. At least that is what it being told the public through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.   At the same in 2010 the BOEM, Bureau of Ocean Management gave Cape Wind a federal permit to build and stage their Nantucket Shoals 130 wind turbines from Quonset Point, Rhode Island. I’m digging, guy’s, but it’s slow digging for fish news. I’ll dredge some up. I always scrape something up. The menu on the blue portion of the header bar is screwed up! Was up till the early hours tryin’ to get it squared away with nothing positive to report. Like, FIXED! It’s drivin’ me nuts! I did come up with something for all the sailors though, the new, reformulated Bluenose that has our Nova Scotia friends up in arms, is posting 2 crew openings! Each job is a temporary, full-time opportunity for the Second Mate, and a deck hand. Read more here

Environmentalists and fishermen rarely agree on anything – ,,They all seem to agree on the importance of ecosystem based management, but not on what it means in practice. Study: Fish pen site still inert – “It’s not a good news story, because we don’t have recovery,”

SHELBURNE — Two years after an aquaculture company’s salmon pen location in Shelburne Harbour was abandoned, part of the harbour bottom is still dead, an independent study has revealed. “It’s the organic material, primarily the feces of the fish and the uneaten food that settles on the bottom and begins this decomposition process, that results in the production of these sulphides.” Copper and zinc were also found in bottom sludge at higher levels than expected.
