AMSEA Updates “Beating the Odds: A Guide to Commercial Fishing Safety,”
The seventh edition of “Beating the Odds: A Guide to Commercial Fishing Safety,” by Susan Clark Jensen and Jerry Dzugan of the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association, is hot off the presses, with updated information on survival at sea. The 250-page book tackles a wide range of issues, from reading the weather and handling fishing gear safely to fatigue, hydration and nutrition, putting out fires onboard and the importance of safe seamanship. Governor Brown signs Chesbro bill to protect fisheries from ‘frankenfish’
Salmon and steelhead face a lot of problems in California, ranging from the state and federal mismanagement of northern California reservoirs during the record drought to the Governor’s plan to build two giant peripheral tunnels under the Delta, but one challenge they won’t face here is the threat posed by the commercial hatchery production, cultivation or stocking of transgenic salmonids, or “frankenfish.” Read the rest here 20:49
Maine Panel Approves 2014-15 Scallop Rules
The state Department of Marine Resources said Wednesday that the council signed off on proposed rules for the season. The rules call for the season to last from Dec. 1 to April 11. Zones one and two will have a 70-day season while zone three will have a 50-day season. Zone three includes scallop-rich Cobscook Bay. Read the rest here 16:16

“Deadliest Catch” fisherman was a pasenger in fatal car wreck. Another fisherman dead, driver fled the scene
The man believed to have been the driver in a single vehicle accident Sept. 19 on Simonds Road in Kirkland was actually one of the passengers, according to the Kirkland Police Department. Kenmore resident and Redmond High School graduate Kyle J. Reel died at the scene of the crash where he was initially thought to have been the driver. His body was found in the front of the car, but it was later discovered he had been sitting in the back and was thrown forward during the crash, according to police. Letter: BLAME CONGRESS NOT NOAA FOR FISHING REGULATIONS
Fishing regulations are controlled by politics and big business, not to mention environmental interests. We all want to help preserve our fish stocks, but how about leveling the playing field? In 1976, the U.S. Congress passed the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act purportedly to “re-Americanize fisheries by controlling or limiting foreign fishing and to restore and conserve the fish.” Read the rest here 14:11

Alaska: As debate approaches, Sullivan swims upstream to challenge Begich on fisheries
The difference in reception for the two U.S. Senate candidates was stark. The Republican, Dan Sullivan, got 45 minutes Friday morning to make his pitch to the United Fishermen of Alaska’s board of directors in a dimly lit hotel conference room in Anchorage — a pitch that at best would draw just a few votes away from his opponent, incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Fishermen challenge proposed closures in Biscayne National Park at final workshop
About five dozen commercial fishermen from South Florida made their final case last week against proposed closures in Biscayne National Park. The 180,000-acre marine park, which stretches 22 miles from just south of Key Biscayne to just north of Key Largo, is seeking to bolster declining fisheries by increasing the size and abundance of fish and invertebrates within its waters by 20 percent. Federal fisheries regulators holding LI hearings on fluke take
Representatives from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission and the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council were in Montauk Tuesday night and will be in East Setauket Wednesday to solicit comments on the plan,, At the Montauk meeting, dozens of commercial fishermen blasted rules that reduce fluke quotas to 50 to 100 pounds a day and force those with federal permits to steam to faraway ports to land their fish. COD: OFFICIALS SAY FISHERMEN, REGULATORS SHARE BLAME
Back in July 2012, John Bullard was the newly minted Northeast regional director for the National Marine Fisheries Service. Soon after he took the reins, Bullard anguished over quota cuts of 77 percent for Gulf of Maine cod and 55 percent for Georges Bank cod, deemed necessary to rebuild those failing stocks. Sandy grant program open to N.J. fishing businesses – From NOAA federal fishery disaster declaration fund
Fishing businesses upended by Hurricane Sandy may be eligible for up to $10,000 in grants to recover from the 2012 storm that tossed around boats and splintered apart docks. The money is available for party and charter boat operators, commercial dealers and commercial fishermen and owners of aquaculture businesses, marinas and bait and tackle shops through a $2.1 million program announced by the state Department of Environmental Protection today.
