Dewey Hemilright: Ardent voice for Outer Banks fishing

Outer Banks fisherman Dewey Hemilright took a busman’s holiday this summer and went to Alaska to fish for salmon. The Kitty Hawk native spent seven weeks in Dillingham, set-netting sockeye salmon in the Wood River, which flows into Bristol Bay, and experiencing another dimension of America’s commercial fishing industry. Believe it or not, there was a time when lustrous nutria pelts were coveted by such stars as Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor and Sophia Loren. Over the years, the “swamp rat” fell into disfavor. Now, a southeast Louisiana company called Righteous Fur seeks to recapture the glory days of nutria fashion by creating eco-friendly nutria designs that can be worn with a guilt-free conscience. SCARBOROUGH, Maine: Lobster boat Seven Seas to the rescue! Pulls father and son aboard.

lobster boat scetchRough seas are being blamed for capsizing a 20-foot boat, stranding a father and son, who were rescued by a passing lobsterman who heard the U.S. Coast Guard’s call for help. The driver of the vessel Seven Seas heard the emergency call, issued at about 7:15 a.m., and was the first to arrive, with two Scarborough Fire and Rescue boats and a Coast Guard ship on his heels, Read the rest here  14:27

Newport fishermen’s wives scramble to save rescue helicopter -Won’t give up without a fight

NEWPORT, Ore. — At 11 a.m. Friday morning, the “Newport Fishermen’s Wives” group held an emergency meeting hours after hearing that the Coast Guard plans to close the town’s search and rescue air operation. Government can be slow – and foolish – Lake Winnipeg whitefish disaster awaits

Here on Lake Winnipeg in Canada, it’s been boon times for fishermen. The walleye have been numerous for years. But we got a wake-up call this fall. A competing species, the whitefish, worth half the value of pickerel and yet counting on our quotas (the poundage we are allowed to catch each year), have come in droves. We cannot escape them. California tries giant water coolers to save fish – “We’re looking at losing an entire generation”

State and federal wildlife officials are resorting to installing giant water chillers in some of California’s fish hatcheries, as drought, over-allocation of water and climate change all combine this year to make temperatures too warm for some baby salmon and other fish to survive. State of Massachusetts Pulls the Plug on Joe’s Lobster Mart

Feds Flex Muscle: Oregon charter captain sentenced for harvesting protected salmon

clip_image002_001A Warrenton, Oregon, charter boat captain pleaded guilty and was sentenced last month for harvesting federally protected wild coho salmon on charter trips with sport fishing clients. The year-long investigation by federal and state officers also led to state fish and wildlife charges against the captain of the Hawk II. Read the rest here  09:43

Dillingham weighs in on annexation

The city of Dillingham is moving forward with its renewed effort to annex the Nushagak commercial fishing district for the purpose of imposing a 2.5 percent raw fish tax, and last Wednesday night held a required meeting to hear from the public. “The idea that the city can tax this public resource is just wrong,” said Diane Wetter. N.C. watermen – Riding along was an unwelcome passenger – a sea turtle observer

Flounder fishermen Britton Shackelford and Caine Livesay motored over the Roanoke Sound at dawn Tuesday in a 17-foot skiff toward the first of seven gill nets.  The state issued an edict in August that commercial gill net fishermen must get a permit as part of a program to track encounters with endangered sea turtles. Allowing observers on fishing trips is necessary to retain the permit and keep fishing. Read the rest here 08:51
