The history of salmon in Marin
The unfunny vaudeville show playing out around silver salmon in general—and their existence in Marin County in particular—is appalling. I am disgusted with the self-serving nature of some who claim to be defenders of the fish, and with the ill-informed Department of Fish and Wildlife, which has ignored and played fast and loose with the species,,, Read the rest here 16:39
From “Deadliest Catch” to ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ – Will Sig Hanson stay a Captain, or be just another washed up Green Horn?
Sig Hansen may be great in the Bering Sea, but how about in the chilly “Celebrity Apprentice” boardroom? Basically, he is going from Alaska to one of the most-populated places in the world for this competition. This competition could be tough for Sig, but almost from a sociological perspective, we are interested to see how he fares in the boardroom alongside celebrities with giant egos. Celebrity Apprentice 2015 season debuts on NBC on January 4. Read the rest here 16:00
Inside an Unfolding Toxic ‘Marine Disaster’ on BC’s Coast
New video acquired by The Tyee, shot by Pacific Wild Executive Director Ian McAllister and April Bencze on Dec. 10, shows a timelapse of the 570-tonne Chilcotin Princess loosely moored to the dock of the former BC Packers salmon cannery at Namu and crashing against crumbling foreshore buildings known to hold barrels of oil and other waste. N.S. activist: Shell cleanup plan includes toxic product
Shell Canada’s cleanup plan in case of a major oil spill off the coast of Nova Scotia could end up making the problem worse, a Shelburne County environmentalist says. Shell plans to drill its first exploratory well in the Shelburne Basin, about 350 kilometres south of Halifax, later this year. Read the rest here 12:28
Marine power company’s decade-long project culminates with energy savings system launch
The major selling point? The system — using software developed by Nasa scientists — eliminates the need for the auxiliary engine — the one used to power internal operations other than propulsion — by drawing all the boat’s power from the main engine. Traditionally, the main engine only provides propulsion, Pagh said. “You want to talk about fuel savings? Turn off a motor,” Read the rest here Another article published: February 21, 2011 11:43
A Neutral View of Oceanic pH
Note that in Hawaii, the surface pH is above 8.05, and in Alaska the surface pH is below 7.7 … and despite that, the marine environment in Alaska is much, much richer in life than the Hawaiian marine environment. This underscores a simple fact—alkalinity is hard on living creatures, much harder than acidity. For example, if you want to dissolve the victim of your latest murder spree, you’d use lye (a strong alkali) and not sulfuric acid (a strong acid). [Well, maybe not you, but your neighbor about whom everyone always said “He always seemed like such a nice man …]Read the rest here 11:10
Strong fall lobster season reported so far along South Shore
Catches are up, the price has climbed past the industry standard of $5 a pound and despite some windy weather, boats are getting out on the water enough to pull in higher loads of lobsters than last year. Those good catches and higher prices has translated into an influx of cash coming into economically depressed communities along the South Shore. Read the rest here 08:43
