Northeast Seafood Coalition loses longtime staffer to retirement
They threw a little party for Christine Sherman on Friday at the Gloucester House Restaurant, a little brunch with friends, family and colleagues, all of whom had collected to wish Sherman good luck upon her retirement from the Northeast Seafood Coalition. The coalition was formed in 2002 and Sherman, the wife of longtime fisherman Russell Sherman, was one of the first ones through the door, first as a volunteer and later as a staffer extraordinaire. “She served in so many capacities over 17 years,” said Jackie Odell, NSC executive director. >click to read<14:48
Fed money for fish study a good sign
As part of $6.9 million in federal disaster relief, the National Marine Fisheries Service approved federal funds for an industry-based survey of Gulf of Maine cod, a species whose apparent decimation led to drastic reductions in catch limits and a fisheries disaster declaration. Gov. Charlie Baker and other Massachusetts elected officials have criticized federal fishery regulators for refusing to consider alternative scientific methods for estimating fish stocks. Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester files bi partisan Seafood Marketing Program bill
The bill, which calls for the establishment of a Massachusetts Seafood Marketing Program within the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), has drawn the support of 23 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives and the Senate. It calls for the establishment of a coordinated program within DMF to market seafood landed in the commonwealth and to take actions to increase consumer demand and preference for the local seafood products and support for the commonwealth’s fishing and seafood industry.
