Two fishermen who disappeared at sea nine years ago drowned in tragic accident, coroner rules
Two crew members drowned in a tragic accident when the boat they were fishing on sank in the North Sea, a coroner has ruled. Michael Pulpul, 38, and Jhunitzquo Antonio, 34, disappeared when the Ocean Way trawler which were were travelling on got into difficulty around 100 miles off the coast of Northumberland. The vessel sank on November 2, 2014 and their bodies have never been found. The pair, who were from the Philippines, were travelling with two other crew members from the same country – Rumulo Rocha and Nixon Ocon – and one of the boat’s skippers James Noble, 45. Mr Pulpul, Mr Antonio and Mr Noble lost their lives when the boat, which Mr Noble co-owned with fellow skipper Billy Edwards, capsized during adverse weather conditions. Lifeboat rescuer relives the dramatic seconds when, as fishing boat sank, he and the crew leapt into the sea
Standing on the stricken fishing vessel, 23 miles off the Shetland coast, the RNLI Lerwick volunteer watched as his colleagues on board the Michael & Jane Vernon lifeboat sped back toward him after being buffeted away from the 24m-long steel trawler. Crew of sunken ‘Ocean Way’ was unprepared for emergency
On the morning of 3 March 2017, the twin-rigged trawler Ocean Way foundered 18 nautical miles north-east of Lerwick, Scotland, after suffering a flood in its aft compartment/accommodation space. The flood was almost certainly the result of hull damage caused when the port trawl door struck the hull during recovery of the gear. Despite the crew’s efforts to bring the flooding under control using fixed and portable pumps, the ingress of water exceeded the pumping effort and Ocean Way succumbed to overwhelming down flooding when the open accommodation space escape hatch submerged. >click to read<12:37
UPDATED: Five fishermen rescued from sinking vessel
Five men were rescued from the fishing vessel Ocean Way around ten miles east of Whalsay on Friday morning before it sank less than one minute later after taking on water. The men abandoned the trawler and jumped into the sea, which is thought to have been less than seven degrees in temperature, before they were collected by the lifeboat. Lifeboat coxswain Alan Tarby described the scene as “chaos” and said there was less than one minute between the men jumping into the water and the boat fully sinking. He believed something “struck the bottom of the boat and made a hole in it”. The men walked away unharmed after being taken into Lerwick Harbour on the lifeboat. The lifeboat crew and Shetland Coastguard were alerted at around 6.50am after receiving reports of water entering the Ocean Way (LK207). North-east boat that sank and killed three fishermen had fatal flaw on deck
Investigators probing a trawler disaster which left three fishermen dead found a fatal flaw on the deck of the vessel. A survey of the wreck of the Ocean Way revealed ports designed to allow water to drain away were not big enough to stop it being swamped by the sea. The 55ft Fraserburgh-registered vessel capsized and sank in bad weather off the north-east coast of England.
