Fisherman died after lifejacket suddenly deflated after falling from west Kerry trawler
A Portugese fisherman drowned when the lifejacket he was wearing suddenly deflated after it was punctured by net cables when he fell overboard from a Kerry trawler off the west coast, an inquest in Tralee into the man’s death has heard. Father of two, Jose Alberto Novo Vareiro (53), from Vila Ovo Conde in Portugal, was a crew member aboard the Dingle-based Cu na Mara when he fell overboard as the trawler was shooting nets for prawns near the Porcupine Bank, some 150 miles west of Dingle on June 30th, 2016. Owner and skipper of the Cu na Mara, Michael Flannery told the inquest at Tralee Courthouse that Mr Vareiro was one of his six crew aboard his vessel who were preparing to shoot the nets at the back of the boat at about 1.25pm on the day in question when the accident happened. >click to read< 08:28
Elephant tusk recovered off Kerry coast by trawler fishing for prawns
An elephant tusk recovered at sea by a Kerry fishing vessel may have originated onboard a slave ship bound for England or America. The Ivory tusk was discovered by the Dingle based Cú na Mara in the Porcupine Basin. The trawler had been fishing for prawns about 120 miles off the Kerry coast when they discovered that the elephant tusk had become entangled in their nets. >click to read< 17:59
Fisherman who drowned after being thrown overboard had his lifejacket deflate while he was in water
Deflation of a crew member’s lifejacket was a “major impediment” to his survival when he was thrown overboard off the south-west coast, the Marine Casualty Investigation Board (MCIB) has found. Additionally, a second crew member put himself at risk when he jumped into the water to try save the first man without any lifeline, the MCBI said. The probe looked into the fatal incident that happened when the FV Cu Na Mara fishing trawler was out to sea around nautical miles west of Slea Head on 30 June 2016. Fishermen in Dingle have landed a rare giant squid for the second time
A fishing crew in Kerry couldn’t believe their luck after they encountered a rare giant squid for the second time this year. The sprawling 5.5 metre Architeuthis landed in Dingle after it was caught by the Cu na Mara crew 150 miles west, on the Porcupine Bank.,,, Patrick Flannery, skipper of Cu na Mara, told RTÉ: “When we opened the net we couldn’t believe it, that it was another one.
