Commercial Fishermen Wary Of Proposed Sanctuary For Hudson Canyon

The Biden Administration has renewed a longstanding proposal,,, Even though most of the Hudson Canyon is about as far from the South Fork as Queens and Brooklyn, commercial and recreational fishermen from East End ports frequent the waters above it, and news of the sanctuary nomination was met with some reflexive concern from commercial fishermen, in particular, who worry that if the designation is made it could lead to them eventually being blocked from fishing in an area critical to their annual harvests. “About 25 percent of what we catch is from there, squid, scup, fluke, a lot of stuff comes out of that area,” said Hank Lackner, one of the owners of Montauk’s largest commercial fishing trawlers, the 94-foot Jason & Danielle. “And for the local fleet, the mid-sized trawlers, that’s the end of their rope — that’s as far as they can go. Our cover story this past weekend about John Aldridge, a Montauk-based lobsterman who fell off his boat and was rescued by the Coast Guard after nearly 12 hours in the water, mentioned a man whose death last year served as another example of the perils of commercial fishing. Coast Guard Investigating Montauk Fisherman’s Death

While Donald Alversa’s family make his funeral arrangements, the Coast Guard has launched an investigation into his death. Though the Coast Guard’s rescue mission is closed, Hill said the Coast Guard Sector North Carolina, based in Wilmington, is leading an investigation into the cause of his death. Parted Wire on F/V Jason & Danielle Kills Montauk Fisherman Donald Alversa Saturday Night off the coast of North Carolina

Donald Alversa, a 24-year-old Montauk man, died after a fishing accident aboard a dragger off the coast of North Carolina on Saturday night. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 10:30 p.m., his family said.  Corinne Alversa said her family is devastated by the loss.
