A Marshfield lobsterman’s impromptu whale watch, Minke whale puts on a show

A minke whale put on quite the show — including a leaping belly flop — for a Marshfield fisherman out at work on Saturday, Quincy’s Patriot Ledger reports. According to the newspaper, Patrick Hurley was bringing in his daily catch when the whale started swimming around his boat.  “Wow! He looked right at me,” the lobsterman exclaims as the whale breaches in a video shared by the Patriot Ledger. “Don’t jump on my boat, buddy.” “I gotta get to work,” he later calls to the whale. video >click to watch< 20:23

2017-2018 Minke Whale Unusual Mortality Event along the Atlantic Coast

Since January 2017, elevated minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) mortalities have occurred along the Atlantic coast from Maine through South Carolina. A table of stranding numbers by state is below. While minke whales are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, the species is not listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Another dead North Atlantic right whale found off Cape Cod

Another dead North Atlantic right whale has been spotted off Massachusetts, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in North America this summer to at least 13. The U.S. Coast Guard documented and reported the latest carcass on Monday, Jennifer Goebel, public affairs officer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Greater Atlantic region, confirmed on Wednesday. This is the third dead North Atlantic right whale discovered in U.S. waters, said Goebel. Environmentalists outraged after ‘green’ wind turbines murder family of whales

Some environmentalists are saying wind turbines pose a threat to whales after a family of minke whales were found dead in the United Kingdom. According to reports by the Times (London) and Daily Caller, a young minke whale was found dead in the United Kingdom on May 20. Its mother was found dead on a nearby beach the same day, and a third whale washed ashore on May 21. It’s believed the three whales were part of the same family. According to marine wildlife experts, the whales were likely disoriented by nearby wind turbines, which can affect the sonar whales use to navigate. click here to read the story 19:57

Minke whale hunt starts off north-eastern Japan coast

A fleet of four whaling ships left a port in north-eastern Japan today (April 10) to hunt a maximum 51 minke whales,,, The Association for Community-Based Whaling, a nonprofit organisation set up for coastal research whaling, plans to hunt in a 90km radius area from Ayukawa port in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, to examine the animal’s impact on marine resources by checking the stomach contents and other facets of the game.
