Healthy parents provide clues to survival of young haddock on Georges Bank

In 2003, haddock on Georges Bank experienced the largest baby boom ever documented for the stock, with an estimated 800 million new young fish entering the population. With typical annual averages of 50 to 100 million new fish in the last few decades, fisheries biologists have been puzzled by the huge increase and its ramifications for stock management. They have been looking for answers and may have found one – healthy adults. Read more here  16:18

Climate Change Forces Reevaluation of Fishery Management. (Isn’t that right, John?)

Scientists now think that altered zooplankton populations may be one reason cod stocks haven’t rebounded as quickly as expected. In addition, water temperatures in southern New England are getting uncomfortably warm for cod. So they’re moving northward and offshore in search of cooler water.. And they’re not alone. Over the past fifty years, more than half of all commercially exploited species have responded to warming waters by changing where they live. That includes the fish that used to fill Eldredge’s weir. William A. Karp, Ph.D. Northeast Fisheries Science Center: Scientists, fishermen must work together

sct logoWith the same respect that I feel for those in New Bedford and elsewhere in New England who are under difficult and constraining groundfish quotas, I call upon the fishing industry and the academic community to work with us to overcome the negative politics and work together to improve our science and mutual understanding. more@southcoasttoday 07:52

F/V Mary K and F/V Yankee Pride Complete Anticipated NMFS Flatfish Pilot Survey

Intense interest in the Georges Bank yellowtail flounder stock is one driver behind a just-completed pilot research survey.  Two commercial trawlers, F/V Mary K and F/V Yankee Pride, worked about 175 stations over 12 days. The survey was coordinated and funded by NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service Northeast Fisheries Science Center, and designed by a panel that included researchers, fishermen, and gear manufacturers. Scallop Industry Set Aside Program Funds Mid-Atlantic Loggerhead Turtle Research – Northeast Sea Turtle Collaborative tagged 20 deploying two solar-powered test units.

The  research team worked from two  commercial sea scallop vessel,   the  91-foot F/V Kathy Ann and the 85-foot F/V Ms Manya, both based in Barnegat  Light, New Jersey.  The project was funded through the sea scallop industry’s research set-aside program awarded to CFF, providing an opportunity for the research organizations to collaborate in this year’s project as they have in previous tagging work.  [email protected] 15:59

Support Available to Help Fishermen Interested in Investing in More Environmentally-Friendly Technologies

Opportunity for fishermen to uimagepgrade to semi-pelagic doors which are expected to help reduce fuel consumption, and reduce the physical impact of trawl systems on the sea bed. Opportunities also exist for support and equipment for vessels to transition to electronic reporting, in which vessel trip report data can be submitted electronically rather than via paper.
