Coronavirus: ‘Like a funeral’: Fisherman laments tanking prices in once-lucrative lobster fishery

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has set opening dates for the lobster fishery from May 1 to May 6, depending on the area of the province where harvesters live. According DFO, there are 2249 lobster license holders but not all are active. Preston Grandy, 40, has been catching lobsters since he was just a boy. On Saturday, he’ll leave his wharf in Garnish on the Burin Peninsula and set his pots, a task he’d normally take on with pure enthusiasm. “Usually setting day for me for lobsters, it’s just like Christmas morning for a kid. Garnish fisherman back to sea six weeks after boat sinks

Just over six weeks after their fishing boat hit a sunker and sank near Brunette Island, off the Burin Peninsula, Preston Grandy and his wife Tonia are getting the vessel ready for the fishing season. “I didn’t think we would get her back from Brunette, let alone six weeks later to have her all redone and back fishing.” It was thanks to the help of others, as well, she said. click here to read the story 09:14

Garnish fishermen facing big bill after boat sinks

Preston Grandy, a fisherman from Garnish, is facing a big repair bill after his longliner sank less then a quarter mile from the community on June 5. “I was over lobster fishing in new grounds, unfamiliar grounds, and I hit an unmarked sunker as the tide was falling,” he explained. “When the tide fell out, then she rolled over.” Grandy said the vessel sustained a hole in the stern, as well as other damage along the side of the boat and the interior. “Complete write off for electronics,” he said. On board the vessel, Grandy had a new plotter capable of creating 3D images, radar, newly installed lighting and other equipment. Tim Ball, a commercial diver who fishes with Grandy, was also on board the vessel at the time it rolled. click here to read the story 09:51

It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
