NEFMC will vote Sept. 30 on changing requirements for groundfish monitoring, fishermen have mixed responses

The New England Fisheries Management Council (NEFMC) is scheduled to vote on changes to its groundfish management plan at a virtual meeting Sept. 30, culminating four years of research. “If we’re going to have accurate stock assessments, we need 100 percent coverage under this management system,” said Cushman. Sinking claims lives of well-known Maine fishing captain, deckhand
A well-respected Maine fishing boat captain and his deckhand have been identified as the two men who died Thursday when their boat sank 45 miles off the coast of Portland. Arnold “Joe” Nickerson IV, a 60-year-old fisherman from Arundel, and 44-year-old crew member Chris Pinkham of Boothbay Harbor died when Nickerson’s 42-foot boat sank, according to the Maine Marine Patrol. Randy Cushman of Port Clyde arrived at the scene shortly after a Coast Guard helicopter, and pulled the bodies out of the water onto his boat. UPDATED: USCG identifies Maine fishermen who died after boat capsized
The United States Coast Guard (USCG) has confirmed the identities of the two people that were aboard the Hayley Ann vessel off the coast of Maine when it capsized Thursday afternoon. The two fishermen have been identified as Arnold “Joe” Nickerson IV, 60, of Arundel and Chris Pinkham, 44, of Boothbay Harbor. Gulf of Maine: What happens when a small Maine town and an offshore energy project collide
A project taking shape about 12 miles offshore from the village of Port Clyde is creating a rift in the tight-knit fishing communities on the St. George peninsula. On one side is Maine Aqua Ventus, a pilot project to test floating turbines as sources of renewable energy. On the other side are fishing families concerned that the turbines and cables used to transport the energy ashore could disrupt fishing habitats on which they rely.,,, “Our largest concern is what is going to happen after this,” said Randy Cushman, 55, a lifelong fisherman and resident of Port Clyde. “I’m worried about the next generation of fishermen, that’s what I’m worried about.
