Mount Pleasant developer to buy one of Shem Creek’s last shrimping docks

One of the last shrimp boat docks on Shem Creek might be saved. Or it might be developed out from underneath the boats, as some fear. Builder and Mount Pleasant resident Brett Elrod has stepped in to buy the Wando dock at the mouth of Shem Creek. Elrod said he plans to work with the community developing the property while maintaining a dock and facilities for shrimp boats.,, But the East Cooper Land Trust, which had been trying to raise money to buy the property, is not convinced and is not partnering with Elrod in the effort. Christmas for the Shem Creek Fleet

Save Shem Creek Corp. teamed up with Shem Creek Fisheries this holiday season to raise money for the Shem Creek fleet. In addition to a BBQ plate fundraiser, Save Shem Creek Corp. started a GoFundMe account to raise money for the fleet. Save Shem Creek Corp. recently held a candidate meet and greet and from that they earned a $1,000 profit. The purpose of the event was not to raise money, according to spokesman Will Bagwell so the board agreed to donate it to Shem Creek Fisheries. “Since the fleet was having such a bad season, we thought there was no one better to give it to than them.” click here to read the story 17:36

Empty nets and light wallets as fall shrimp season disappoints in South Carolina

The fall white shrimp season has been a painful one for South Carolina’s diminished fleet of trawlers, with many people wondering what’s become of all the tasty crustaceans. “They’re just not here,” said Grace Edwards, head of Shem Creek Fisheries, whose husband runs a trawler. “They are having a terrible season,” said Jimmy Bagwell, chairman of the Save Shem Creek Corp. “A lot of the boats have gone to Florida and Georgia to try to catch something.” In McClellanville, Mayor Rutledge B. Leland III runs Carolina Seafood, and he’s seen the same thing. “It’s really been a pretty sad fall, so far,” he said. Some shrimpers have headed up to North Carolina, where Leland said they are having a better season. click here to read the story 15:29
