Coast Guard Medevacs 67-year-old fishing vessel Captain from Matagorda Bay, Texas

The Coast Guard medevaced an injured man from Matagorda Bay, Texas, Thursday. Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi command center watchstanders received notification at 4:17 p.m. from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office that the 67-year-old captain of the commercial fishing vessel F/V Master Ricky had reportedly been struck in the head by rigging block while working gear and was intermittently unconscious. Shrimp Boat Captain Richard Emil Rick Shattel

Richard Emil “Rick” Shattel’s life ended peacefully in the presence of his family on August 5, 2021. He was sixty-nine years old. Rick was born March 7, 1952, in Galveston, to Emil and Josephine Schattel. Rick was a man of the sea hardened by salt and sun. He was a third-generation commercial fisherman who captained multiple shrimp boats of the Mosquito Fleet including the Shell Belly and his favorite, the Katie Marie. Mount Pleasant honors late iconic shrimper Capt. Wayne Magwood, with commemorative plaque

The Town of Mount Pleasant will commemorate the life of iconic Shem Creek shrimp boat captain, Wayne Magwood, with a special plaque on Thursday. Captain Magwood was struck and killed by a passing truck while crossing Mill Street at Coleman Boulevard in September 2020. His boat, Winds of Fortune, was a familiar sight on Shem Creek, according to the town. They say he was a passionate advocate for the local shrimping industry and a “great town partner at the Blessing of the Fleet and Seafood Festival for the past 33 years.” Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie and members of town council joined the Magwood family on Thursday afternoon to unveil a commemorative plaque on the new Shem Creek pedestrian bridge. video, >click to read< 18:45

Shrimp boat captain jailed for damaging another boat fishing ‘in his spot

The Sheriff’s Office sent marine units to an area of the Rigolets Pass near Geoghegan Canal to respond to a call about an altercation between the occupants of two shrimp boats, according to a news release. Casey Russell, 35, became angry when he spotted someone else shrimping “in his spot,” the Sheriff’s Office release said. >click to read<  18:40
