Fishing Law Privatizes Sea off Chilean Coast
Filmmaker Baltasar Kormakur gets deep – DD – What inspired you to make ‘The Deep?’
BK – When I was 18-years-old, the 1984 fishing tragedy was national news in Iceland. Everyone can identify with this story because many here have lost loved ones to the sea. Iceland’s economy depends heavily on the fishing industry. I actually had the opportunity to meet the hero of the story. He had a profound impact on me. Another reason I was drawn to the story was that our country went through an economic collapse with our banking system in 2008. This story acted as a metaphor for what Iceland went through during that dark period. Read more The Deep Trailer

We should pay attention! Fishermen avoid more European quota cuts
BERWICKSHIRE fishermen will not be facing any further cuts to the days they spend at sea or the quota of fish they can catch as they head into a new year. The European Union fishing talks concluded with ministers accepting that there is no justification for further restrictions as part of the cod recovery plan. Borders MP Michael Moore and local MSP John Lamont welcomed the halting of cuts in cod quota and the number of days at sea as good news for Berwickshire fishermen. Berwickshire fishermen have long been challenging EU conservation measures, telling politicians the North Sea is full of fish. Read More

Endangered Species: Small-Scale Fishermen Written by M. Ben-Yami —
They have solid sea legs, good seamanship, and first-hand experience in reacting to weather and sea vagaries and in handling navigational and working deck emergencies; but they are increasingly squeezed. In many developed countries small-scale/artisanal fisheries mainly supported by small family businesses (SSF) are dwindling. There’re several causes to this process. Whats up with this NOAA Fisheries stuff? I cannot find anything official, but they have it plastered on everything!
This abandonment of NMFS and the increased use of “NOAA FISHERIES” prompted me to do some snooping around, but I can’t find anything about it! EPA grant to fund sea lamprey testing. Lamprey threaten both the ecosystem and commercial fishing in the Great Lakes
LANSING — A $392,000 Environmental Protection Agency grant will pay for testing sea lamprey repellent on three to-be-named spawning streams in the state. The project is expected to be completed within the 10 years the EPA requires.
Sea lamprey are attracted to the smell of their young and repulsed by the stench of their dead, said Michael Wagner, lead researcher on the project and an assistant professor of fisheries and wildlife at Michigan State University. http://record-eagle.com/statenews/x1839360630/EPA-grant-to-fund-sea-lamprey-testing
Canada Plan to cull 70,000 grey seals gets Senate panel’s approval.
The Senate’s fisheries committee has endorsed a contentious cull of 70,000 grey seals in the Gulf of St. Lawrence over a four-year period, in a bid to conserve cod stocks. But critics say that plans for a cull have been driven by politics, not science.
A group of marine biologists at Dalhousie University in Halifax issued an open letter last fall that said a cull could produce unintended consequences, including further depletion of the cod. (now THAT makes alotta sense!!!) One cannot credibly predict from a science perspective whether a cull of grey seals would have a positive impact on cod or negative impact on cod … or no impact whatsoever,” he said. (I’m thinkin’ outside the box. It’ll help the cod!)
CARL SAFINA and BRETT JENKS – How to Catch Fish and Save Fisheries – TURF. Another recipe for Catch Shares and Closures!
These guys are just to smart. Silver bullet? Buckshot? If I had a rocket launcher ……..
This will help to understand the mindset. Scientists Confirm That Reality is an Illusion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qngieHWZXcM&feature=related
TURF reserves are not a silver bullet. They might, however, be the silver buckshot. With nearly one billion people reliant on the ocean for their primary source of protein, stakes are high. If the most fish-dependent nations adopted widespread networks of TURF Reserve, they can potentially create enough fish recovery to feed hundreds of millions of people. That’s a big if, however. The solution is not to fix a small number of fisheries. We need thousands of TURF reserves in dozens of countries just to get the ball rolling. Ultimately, we need a commitment of governments, foundations, NGOs and the private sector to forge a major investment in near shore fisheries in the developing tropics. The coastal communities themselves must unfurl the ocean’s silver lining.http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/20/opinion/how-to-catch-fish-and-save-fisheries.html?_r=3&
Carl Safina is founding president of the Blue Ocean Institute at Stony Brook University, where he is an adjunct professor in marine sciences. Brett Jenks is the president and chief executive of Rare, a global conservation organization based in Arlington, Virginia.
Seal Problems Everywhere! Fishermen want cull of New Zealand fur seals around the Coorong Lakes area

The Pew Dog and Greenpeace’s anti-Sealord spoof.
My friend, jj the fisherman, is very creative, and a pretty smart SOB. He creates legitimate satire. You will find plenty more at his column. Click show more to find it all. Lots of photo and great articles. http://jjthefisherman.newsvine.com/
It appears that Greenpiece finds it a legitimate method of communicating their anti fishing view, of which ending fishing would probably find them destitute, as it is apparent they are on a path of unsustainability by over-exploiting fishermen!
The greedy ENGOs just don’t understand their greed to hunt the last fisherman to extinction will cause an unprecedented collapse of their bread and butter revenue raising target.
Rage erupts over Greenpeace’s anti-Sealord spoof
“Satire has long been used as a way of getting messages across. We’re not criticising the workers that feature in this ad. Those in the fishing industry here and in the Pacific deserve to have a future in the fishing industry, and they’re entitled to make a living from the sea, but Sealord itself is putting that at risk by its destructive catch methods,” he affirmed. Satisfaction with recovery of bluefin tuna stock – Scientific Committee of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
The good news was released by the Scientific Committee of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) in the latest report published by this organization.
The paper estimates that the bluefin tuna spawning stock again approaches and even exceeds 300,000 tonnes that had been reached between the late ’50s and early ’70s,
and that was reduced to about 150,000 tonnes in the first decade of XXI century. Read More

You are a fisherman, but the queer minded stakeholders and PC environ-kooks are calling you “fishers”! Why?
There is a new buzzword. Fishers.
Managers should involve the entire community — including fishers, dive operators, the public, and seafood industries — in their management plans.
What is it about the mindset of these people that makes them want to change things around, even the word fishermen.
There are men, there are women. When will they become so pc that they drop men from the word women?!
Sorry for ranting. It just bugs me, man. BH

Study: Fraud growing in scientific research papers
WASHINGTON — Fraud in scientific research, while still rare, is growing at a troubling pace, a new study finds. A review of retractions in medical and biological peer-reviewed journals finds the percentage of studies withdrawn because of fraud or suspected fraud has jumped substantially since the mid-1970s. In 1976, there were fewer than 10 fraud retractions for every 1 million studies published, compared with 96 retractions per million in 2007.
The Ringer – A True Story of the National Marine Fisheries Service Observer Program
Origional post Sun Aug 21, 2011 by jj
The Ringer A True Story of the National Marine Fisheries Service Observer Program
The National Marine Fishery Service observer program sends many recent graduates of marine biology programs out on fishing vessels to collect data for fisheries science and to observe fishing activity and how it affects the environment and wildlife. In stories about fishing you often hear of the efforts of sea captains and their brave crews and never a word about the observer who accepts and takes many of the same risks as anyone who signs on as a crew member in the world’s most dangerous job.
Call her M. as anonymity is a requirement of this story. She came aboard like every other observer with a stack of baskets and fish measuring stuff for her work during the voyage. She was in her early twenties. In a baggy sweatshirt pulled over a slender frame with hair pulled back in a pony tail she looked like just another fresh faced college kid ready to do her part for the cause of fish science. At first she kept to herself but since we weren’t going to take any fish on board the Osprey at that time of year it isn’t a very demanding job for an observer. I think this whole story happened because she got bored.
My crewmate C.D. is a cribbage player with a long history of wins over fellow crew members and captains. We had been having a series of very competitive games and while there was no clear victor I would give him a slight advantage over me in both number of wins and quality of play. He is very proud of his game and ability to play and brags on himself a little at times,,,,,,,,,,,Read More
