Gloucester: City seeks consensus on aid for fishing, port

gdt iconThese days, the view for fishing industry stakeholders and Gloucester’s elected officials is from the very belly of the beast. And that is hardly ever the optimum vantage point. “We know we need to develop a comprehensive plan that will allow us to capitalize fully on the disaster aid money that comes here,” Kirk said. “The plan will pick up after that money is distributed.” Read more@gdt  05:36

The Alaska Fisheries Report

Coming up this week, sportsfishing interests in Soldotna are not giving up on their efforts to force a vote to ban setnets in Cook Inlet, there’s more quota for Southeast halibut fishermen, but less elsewhere, and a breakthrough in excluders for trawl nets might save more salmon. All that, and, when is a pollock a cod? Kinda… now – we’ll explain that, all coming up on the Alaska Fisheries Report. Listen @kmxt  20:55

Government Regulations Drowning New England Fisheries

paul vitale 2012One well-seasoned commercial fisherman says Federal regulations are drowning New England fisheries. He says catch shares, where fishermen are limited to a certain quota of fish per season, are to blame. “90% of the seafood consumed in the United States comes from overseas. So we do all these rules and regulations here, we tie down all our fisherman from going fishing. And the rest of the world don’t [have] the same rules that we do, and they taking our market share,” says Carlos Rafael of Carlos Seafood in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Read [email protected]  17:14

In the Guest Writer Column – Joe Daughty – “Hey Cap! I’ve got you man. He’ll be here within the hour.”

Well, I can’t believe I’m gonna tell this story, because it was kinda a rotten thing to do. But it was insanely funny at the time. I had been running a swordfish longline boat named the “Kelly Ann” out of Ft Pierce Fl. for quite a while. I got myself into a situation where I’d fired an under achieving crewman and couldn’t find a replacement. Decent crew were hard to find these days and I had began to…Read the story

It never end’s. Analysis targets commercial fishing’s role in manatee deaths and injuries

How many manatees can commercial fishermen in Florida injure or kill every year without affecting the future of a species that has been on the endangered list since 1967? The answer, according to an analysis the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service unveiled Thursday, is 14. The only problem: The agency says the annual average number of deaths and injuries due to commercial fishing is 99. And that calculation doesn’t include the record 829 manatees overall that died in 2013. Bob Jones, who has been executive director of the Southeastern Fisheries Association for four decades, said he had not seen the report yet but “I don’t believe it.” In his view, commercial fisherman play a negligible role in the future of manatees.  Read [email protected] 21:0

If You are counting on Federal Disaster Relief funding,,,,“The New England and West Coast delegations are very good at grabbing that money,”

“We’ll be competing with every state to get a share of that money,” Thomas P. Fote, legislative chairman of the Jersey Shore Anglers Association, said. The original fisheries disaster funding of 2013 would have sent money to the Sandy-struck mid-Atlantic states; New England fishermen beleaguered with quota cutbacks; and Gulf of Mexico and Northwest fishermen who saw big drops in crab and salmon numbers. Now it’s likely to be a free-for-all asking for money, Fote said. (?) Read more@dailyjournal  15:51
