The fishing boat Miss Jenna, which regularly docks at Tisbury Wharf Co. in Vineyard Haven Harbor, ran hard aground on Naushon early Friday morning.,,, Station Woods Hole respond to the Miss Jenna, Lt. Coast Guard crew members aboard three separate vessels rescued a 50-foot commercial fishing vessel disabled 116 miles west of Newport Wednesday. The 41-ton vessel, Ruby Lily, which reported 6 tons of albacore tuna and three crew members aboard, was safely moored in Yaquina Bay after a four-day opperation. Lobsterman charged after boat collision
A schooner operated by a Portland tour company, and a lobster boat collided near the entrance to Customs House Wharf on Sunday evening, resulting in one arrest for boating under the influence. The lobster boat, Patricia Ann, was being operated by Russell N. Parmenter, 39, a lobster fisherman from Yarmouth. The bowsprit of the schooner, the Timberwind, was damaged. A commercial fishing boat grounded early Friday morning near the East Chop Beach Club after the captain reportedly fell asleep at the helm. “That was a sight — a big fishing boat like that on the beach,” Oak Bluff Fire Chief John Rose said. Rose said the captain, whom the U.S. Coast Guard later identified as Sam Berreira, set his autopilot and dozed off. A fishing captain has pleaded guilty to throwing away fish in North Carolina to prevent the Coast Guard from seizing it. Federal prosecutors said Tuesday that 51-year-old William Juel, of Little River, South Carolina, pleaded guilty to disposing of illegally caught fish in North Carolina. Beginning sometime this winter, here in the northeast observers switched from the safety checklist to the “pre-trip safety inspection”. Basically, instead of accepting a card signed by a previous observer good for three months, with all the expiration dates listed for the EPIRB and other equipment,,, Anyone that has been sued knows that when someone gets hurt everyone remotely involved gets dragged in. If this is happening on my vessel it is happening elsewhere. For that reason I am releasing the statement I have written for all fishermen to use. It is not a legal document, but it will provide you with proof that you attempted to protect them from their own unsafe actions. The Coast Guard is searching for a person in the water in Nushagak Bay, Monday. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew and C-130 Hercules aircraft crew from Air Station Kodiak are searching for a male crew member from the commercial fishing vessel Pail Rider who went overboard at approximately 3 a.m. The man was not wearing a life jacket, but was wearing orange pants and bib. The crew aboard the Pail Rider fired flares and other vessels arrived on scene to assist with the search. Representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard are in Dillingham through June 17 offering free dockside examinations for commercial boats, By getting an examination before heading out for the season, fishermen can make sure that their boats will easily pass inspection if they get boarded by the Coast Guard at sea. Coast Guard examiners say boat requirements vary based on how far out the vessel will be traveling. Coast Guard to Conduct Dockside Fishing Vessel Exams for Bristol Bay
The Coast Guard will offer courtesy dockside examinations of commercial fishing vessels in Bristol Bay in anticipation of the 2019 Bristol Bay salmon fishery season. Efforts to plug oil leak in British WWII tanker torpedoed by U-boat off US coast
A team has been working to stop oil leaking from a British tanker sunk off the US coast during World War Two. The Coimbra was carrying more than two million gallons of oil when she was torpedoed in January 1942 by a German U-boat. She sank about 30 miles off the coast of Long Island, New York, and became one of 148 petrol tankers and other ships sunk by the U-boats near the coast. The Coast Guard rescued a man from his fishing vessel that was taking on water northeast of Kake and towed the vessel to safety, Tuesday. Watchstanders in the Sector Juneau command center received a call from the friend of a fisherman in Petersburg, reporting that his friend had contacted him via an inReach device and indicated that his 40-foot fishing vessel Neto was taking on water near Eliza Harbor.
