Third Medevac in Three Months for F/V Golden Alaska
On Thursday, a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 helicopter from the cutter Stratton medevaced a 59-year-old crewmember from the factory trawler Golden Alaska about 35 nm northwest of Cold Bay, a small fishing port in the Aleutian Islands. The individual was reportedly suffering from inhalation of unknown chemicals. Weather on scene was favorable, with calm seas and light airs. The aircrew safely hoisted the man aboard from the Alaska’s bow and brought him to Cold Bay, where he was transferred onto a LifeMed aircraft ambulance and flown to Anchorage. >click to read<10:16
Navy, Coast Guard rescue 3 fishermen 63 miles east of Brunswick
The Navy, along with assistance from the Coast Guard rescued three fishermen Tuesday 63 miles southeast of Brunswick, Georgia. Watchstanders at Coast Guard 7th District received a 406 megahertz emergency position indicating radio beacon alert from the 42-foot fishing vessel Barbara Lynn at approximately 3:30 a.m. Watchstanders released an enhanced group calling (EGC) message and launched a Coast Guard Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Tahoma crew to the vessel’s last known position. >click to read<12:27
Coast Guard locates 8 people in life raft over 400 miles north of Hawaii
A Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircrew from Air Station Barbers Point located a life raft with eight people aboard from the fishing vessel Princess Hawaii over 400 miles north of the Big Island, Sunday evening. The Hercules crew will remain on scene as long as fuel is available and the crew of the commercial fishing vessel Commander is en route to pick up the crew. The Princess Hawaii reportedly had a captain, six crewmembers and an observer from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration aboard and was fishing within 20 miles of its sister ship, the Commander. >click to read< 09:08
Pensacola Bay – Coast Guard, local agencies respond to vessel fire and spilt diesel
Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders received a notification of a 50-foot commercial fishing vessel catching fire while moored at Joe Patti’s Marina in Pensacola Bay at 4:26 p.m. Pensacola Fire Department extinguished the fire but the vessel sank and discharged an estimated 100 gallons of diesel into the water. Seatow deployed containment boom and sorbent pads around the vessel to collect oil. A vacuum truck and skimmer are en route to begin operations Saturday morning. Coast Guard rescues 3 from grounded vessel in Peril Strait, Alaska
A Coast Guard Air Station Sitka MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew rescued three people after their fishing vessel grounded in Peril Strait, Wednesday. The Jayhawk helicopter crew landed on shore and embarked the three individuals. They were taken to Air Station Sitka in good condition. Coast Guard assists disabled fishing vessel 110 miles east of Cape Cod
Two aircraft out of U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod responded Sunday night to a distress call from a disabled fishing ship roughly 110 miles east of Cape Cod, according to Coast Guard Petty Officer Andrew Barresi. The fishing vessel Captain Joe was without power and needed a battery to run a generator, Barresi said. Captain Joe’s sister ship, Orion, was about 50 miles away with a battery. >click to read<08:52
Coast Guard rescues 3, searching for missing boater 70 miles south west of Fort Myers Beach
The Coast Guard is searching for a 63-year-old man in the Gulf of Mexico after a fishing boat sank 70 miles south west of Fort Myers Beach. Searching for Dennis Grim, 63. Rescued were James Beeman, Anthony Bertolino, Darren Whalen. At 3:59 a.m. Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders received a distress call via VHF-FM marine band radio channel 16 from Beeman, the captain aboard the 37-foot commercial fishing boat, J.U.M.A., out of Seminole. How the Coast Guard promotes safety during crabbing season
Since the start of the season in January, Coast Guard Station Coos Bay has seen a relatively safe season. “We’ve had about 6 calls for assistance,” said Commanding Officer Kary Moss, “and those calls for assistance have all been for mechanical failures of some sort.” While mechanical failures are inevitable, to promote safety the Coast Guard requires commercial fishing vessels to complete dockside safety exams. >click to read< 15:48

The captain of a commercial fishing vessel called the “Linda Labin” claimed to have no idea there were 14 undocumented immigrants hidden on his boat. A federal investigation suggests otherwise. Coast Guard issues violations for illegal fishing near Cape Romain
A Coast Guard boarding team issued fishing and safety violations Thursday to a vessel 19 miles east of Cape Romain, South Carolina. The 44-foot fishing vessel The Long Line was found actively laying and retrieving fishing pots in a prohibited area. The Coast Guard Cutter Cormorant noticed The Long Line crew setting their pods Wednesday night and later retrieving the pods Thursday morning. 28 accidents reported since crab season began off Oregon, Washington
Since the commercial Dungeness crab season began on January 15th, Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Portland marine investigators have responded to 28 marine accidents involving commercial fishing vessels, with no reported deaths or serious injuries. Man Gets 56 Months for False Distress Calls, Threats to Coast Guard
A 39-year-old Newport News man was sentenced in Norfolk federal court on Tuesday to 56 months in prison for making a false distress call and threats to the U.S. Coast Guard, officials said.
Justin P. Stahmer was convicted of the crimes by a federal jury on Nov. 13, 2017, according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release. Court documents state that Stahmer made a false distress call on June 20, 2016 while several miles northeast of Cape Henry. >click to read<07:20

On this day in 1952, one of the most daring rescues in the history of the Coast Guard took place six miles off Chatham. 4 men rescued from sinking F/V Sea Star speak out
Four people were rescued from a sinking boat about 18 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard Wednesday night, according to the Coast Guard. A Coast Guard aircrew airlifted four fishermen into a helicopter around 6:20 p.m. Captain Andrew Arnett told NBC 10 News he was sleeping when his crew members awoke him to news that the boat was about to sink. “No longer than 30 seconds after I got up, we’d taken a wave over the stern,” Arnett said. A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew medevaced a 51-year-old man, early Thursday morning from a fishing vessel approximately 45-miles south of Montauk. The Coast Guard rescued four people Tuesday after a 14-foot skiff capsized in Deep Cove near Eastport, Maine, sending five people into the 39 degree water. A good Samaritan called 911 at about 2 p.m. to report the capsize, and said four people were in the water in need of rescue and a fifth had swam to shore.
