Body of missing Coos Bay fisherman recovered in Alaska
The body of a missing fisherman whose boat capsized off the Alaskan coast has been found, according to his family. Jake Hannah, 22, was one of five men aboard the “Wind Walker” fishing vessel when it went down in stormy conditions near Juneau a week and a half ago. Earlier this week, Alaska authorities found remains and debris on a remote beach near Hoonah. Jake’s mom, Carol, confirmed that one of the bodies recovered has since been positively identified as Jake “I’m happy and sad at the same time. I’m happy my Jake has been found. F/V Wind Walker: Utah man, 4 others missing after fishing boat capsizes off Alaska coast
A Utah man and four others are missing after their fishing boat capsized early Sunday morning off Couverden Point, Alaska, about 24 miles southwest of Juneau. According to a press release by the U.S. Coast Guard, the search for the missing fishermen was suspended Monday morning, one day after they received a Mayday call that the vessel was overturning. Among those aboard the commercial fishing vessel Wind Walker was Alex Zamantakis, 28, who grew up in Magna. Humboldt Fisherman’s Wives Holding Burn Recovery Fundraiser for Captain and Two Crews Members of Mariah K
The Humboldt fisherman’s wives has generously offered to put on a Burn recovery fundraiser for my nephew and his 2 crew members that sustained severe burns while commercial fishing off of Oregon Coast a month ago when the boat engine exploded. The 2 crew were released from the hospital a couple weeks ago and are now recovering at home. Three Rescued From Burning Vessel Off Brookings Tuesday Evening; GoFundMe Set Up For Survivor
Three people are in a San Francisco-area hospital after their fishing vessel caught on fire about 50 nautical miles off the coast of Brookings on Tuesday. According to Petty Officer Briana Carter, a public affairs officer for the U.S. Coast Guard 13th District, a good Samaritan got the three survivors out of the water and transferred them to a Coast Guard vessel, which brought them to shore for care. According to a GoFundMe page set up on behalf of Emanuel Silveira, the Mariah K is “gone due to the engine exploding.” The campaign was created by Jaimie Ouellette, who said Silveira is his/her son-in-law. F/V Second Chance hires salvage company to help get shrimp boat off the Port Aransas sandbars
It has now been three weeks since the ‘Second Chance’ shrimp boat washed up along the shore in Port Aransas, but it looks like it’s finally moving along! The boat has moved from the second sandbar of the beach and continues to try to make its way into deeper water. The Coast Guard said the boat’s crew said a salvage company has been hired to help dislodge it, although they did not yet have information on which company was hired or when the move is scheduled to begin. Shrimp boat captain grateful for community support
For just over a week, it has been a sight for the curious: a mysterious shrimp boat that washed up along the beach in Port Aransas. For Phillip Lara, Captain of the Second Chance boat, it has been one crashing wave after another. “Well, the whole thing has been a nightmare,” he said. “We accidentally busted our anchor line, and we were coming in to replace it, and then we had a fuel issue, which killed the boat. I had a secondary anchor, and it wasn’t big enough. We did everything we could to stop it.” The community has taken notice of his plight. Fishing community grieves the loss of a Hampton lobsterman
Juan Peralta-Martinez became a lobsterman at a time when many say the industry was struggling to stay afloat, but those who worked alongside him said he was born for a life at sea. “He was meant to be one of the lobstermen,” said Linda Hunt, manager of Yankee Fishermen’s Cooperative,,, A husband and father of two from Hampton, Juan died at age 36 years Monday from what authorities believe was a drowning while working on his boat in the harbor. Memorial Fund for Helen and Sig Decker organized and facilitated by United Fishermen of Alaska
Yesterday the unimaginable happened. Julie and Gig Decker learned that they lost both their children, Helen and Sig Decker in a car accident in Petersburg, Alaska. Helen was 19 and Sig was 21. Although both were born and raised in Wrangell, Helen and Sig were in Petersburg fishing side-by-side for the summer to help pay for college. The tragedy that has shocked so many is described, and mentions two other victims in this horrible turn of events. They are identified as Ian Martin, 29 of Petersburg and Dennis Lord, 37 of Elmira Heights, New York. Matthew Raynor, 29, and a resident of Hampton Bays, was gravely injured in a diving accident doing just that near Towd Point in North Sea. Matthew is a commercial fisherman, clammer, bayman, world traveler and photographer.
