Study Reveals Salmon Mislabeling in Seattle Sushi Restaurants
Researchers conducted a study on salmon samples from 67 grocery stores and 52 local sushi shops, revealing that 32.3% of sushi restaurant samples contained farmed salmon instead of the wild salmon that vendors claimed. It remains unclear whether this mislabeling occurred at the restaurant level or earlier in the distribution chain. In contrast, no grocery store samples were found to have this issue, although 11.1% of the salmon sold in grocery stores was identified as the incorrect species. Additionally, 38% of the samples from restaurants were substituted with the wrong type of salmon. The financial implications for consumers are significant. When customers believe they are purchasing high-quality wild salmon, they may be willing to pay a higher price, not realizing they are receiving a less valuable product. Atlantic ChiCan exported U.S. lobster to China claiming it came from Canada
A Chinese-owned lobster company in Nova Scotia has been fined $50,000 for illegally shipping American lobsters primarily to China and claiming it came from Canada. Atlantic ChiCan pleaded guilty Thursday in provincial court in Dartmouth, N.S., to two counts related to the mislabeling. A national seafood distributor is defending its reputation as sales plummet after The Associated Press found it was not living up to a guarantee that all of its seafood was wild, sustainable, traceable and caught by local fishermen. Sea To Table owner Sean Dimin said most problems identified by the AP were honest mistakes or the result of miscommunication, and some supporters came to his defense. But four former employees said they raised concerns about mislabeling, the blending of imports and deceptive marketing practices years ago, and were ignored or silenced.
