Back on the Bayou: Local shrimp boat blessings return after a year lost to COVID

In a decades-old tradition, Catholic churches in fishing communities throughout south Louisiana lead the blessings in hopes of a safe and prosperous shrimp season. This year, the Rev. Antonio Speedy of Holy Family Catholic Church said the Blessing of the Fleet in Bayou Grand Caillou will look more like normal but will still have to keep the pandemic in mind. “It will be mostly family units on the boats, and it’s an outdoor event, so there will be plenty of wind blowing around, but we still have to stay prudent.” >click to read< 10:02

Communities to kick off boat blessing ceremonies

As temperatures warm up, the bayou communities of Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes are preparing to send their shrimpers, trawlers and fishermen out onto the Gulf waters. Before venturing out, these marine wayfarers will be asking for the Lord’s blessing in an age-old tradition to ensure a bountiful harvest and their safety at sea. Chauvin, Dulac and Montegut will be the first three towns to kick off the Blessing of the Fleet ceremonies on Sunday. Golden Meadow and Pointe-aux-Chenes will follow over the next few weekends. It took me a while to decide how to most accurately describe the situation that has been visited upon the New England fishing communities that are and since colonial times have been dependent on the groundfish fisheries.

While it’s a fact that’s hardly ever acknowledged, the assumption in fisheries management is that if the population of a stock of fish isn’t at some arbitrary level, it’s because of too much fishing. Hence the term “overfished.” Hence the mandated knee jerk reaction of the fisheries managers to not enough fish; cut back on fishing. What of other factors? They don’t count. It’s all about fishing, because fishing is all that the managers can control; it’s their Maslow’s Hammer. When it comes to the oceans it seems as if it’s about all that the industry connected mega-foundations that support the anti-fishing ENGOs with hundreds of millions of dollars a year in “donations” are interested in controlling.
