lafayetteMonster fishing ship in Pacific, east of Australia – The world’s largest fishing vessel, the factory freezer ship Lafayette, has turned up in the Pacific Ocean east of Australia. Satellite-tracking systems registered the location of the controversial 49,000 tonne Lafayette and six attendant trawlers north-east of Norfolk Island on Friday, Greenpeace said. The Russian-flagged, Chinese-owned vessel is five times the size of the Dutch factory trawler Margiris, which was banned from Australian waters in 2012. Read [email protected] 14:20

Some commercial fishermen upset by Alaska fish board’s new scheme

The Alaska Board of Fisheries meeting has finished in Anchorage with a new plan for commercial fishing in Cook Inlet and commercial fishermen are angry. The board settled on a scheme to permit commercial driftnetters to fish more in the lower Inlet near Homer while restricting them in the waters off Kenai farther north. The hope is the plan will allow the driftnetters to catch just as many Kenai Peninsula sockeye salmon as in the past, but with a bycatch of fewer of the struggling silver and sockeye salmon bound for the Susitna River drainage. Q. I have recently read an editorial about the shrimp farming industry and the absolute hell it brings upon the mangroves of Southeast Asia and the use of horrendous chemicals. I immediately thought, “Shit, now I have to stop eating shrimp too!?” So I checked my freezer to look at what might be my last bag of frozen shrimp, and I saw the mark for the best aquaculture practice I read the various pages, however, and it could very well be greenwashing.
