Seals gobble half a million fish – commercial fisheries report almost 500K in losses

Professional fishermen in Finland are up in arms about damages to their catch and equipment from grey seals. Council closes scallop beds; raises crew levels

mkThe closure will cost millions of dollars in the short term, but are predicted to have a payoff in years beyond 2017 when the areas can reopen and the grown scallops harvested. Fieldwood Energy reported an explosion on its Echo Platform in the Gulf on Thursday; 1 dead, 3 injured

The bureau said in a statement that the platform was not in production at the time of the explosion and damage was limited to the area. The statement said there was no indication that any oil had spilled into the ocean. Read more here  23:57

To meet the demand for marine fuelling service on Alberni Inlet, the port authority has purchased a narrow strip of land by Fishermen’s Harbour.The Port Alberni Port Authority closed the deal on the 2.3-acre property from Western Forest Products in the past couple of weeks for $319,000. Locals prepare submittle to create a National Marine Sanctuary along the Central Coast
