Coast Guard assists disabled grounded fishing vessel in Prince William Sound

USCGCrews from the Coast Guard Cutter Mustang and a Station Valdez 45-foot Response Boat-Medium assisted the crew of a fishing vessel that ran aground Thursday morning on the south side of Evans Island in Prince William Sound. Governor Walker has put SAM COTTON in place as the current acting commissioner – so Cora Campbell is out.  We’re more than pleased with Sam.  He has always shown great respect for Alaska and its fishermen and coastal communities. We hope that Gov. Officials: Fishing Training Grant Critical for Safety

Congress passed a bill today that will help ensure the safety of local fishermen, according to US Congressman William Keating (D-Bourne). The bill, HR 5769, the Howard Coble Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2014, reauthorizes funding for the US Coast Guard for fiscal years 2015 and 2016.  Included in the legislation was a Keating Provision that reauthorized critical fishing safety training grant programs. Lobster roll-over on Saint John bridge spills 40,000 pounds – “And we said, ‘Let’s try to see if we can help out,”

Nobody was injured, but tens of thousands of lobsters were spilled onto the bridge from the trailer. Cecil McCavour, whose parents operate Whitetail Fisheries Inc./Lorneville Lobster Shop, happened to be crossing the bridge when he saw the truck tipped over and noticed the lobster crates. He didn’t know whose lobster truck it was, but rushed home to tell his parents. “And we said, ‘Let’s try to see if we can help out,” his mother Karen McCavour told CBC News. Read the rest here 12:47

So peaceful, so tranquil, then,,,, BAM!!! At about 2:20 a.m., the Washington County dispatch notified watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Eastport, Maine, that the end of the Eastport breakwall had fallen into the water. 12:20:41

BP oil spill claims adjuster pleads guilty to $257,400 wire fraud

A former BP oil spill claims adjuster pleaded guilty Wednesday to filing false claims for people who were not affected by the 2010 disaster. Charlie English III, 33, of LaPlace, admitted filing six bogus claims, According to court records, English recruited people to pose as commercial fishing workers who had lost their jobs or income as a result of the spill. N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries drops Commercial red drum harvest limit

The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries has announced a reduction in how many red drum commercial fishermen may harvest while fisheries officials assess the landing totals to date. Beginning Friday, the commercial daily trip limit for red drum will drop to four fish, Read the rest here 09:36

Indonesia to sink illegal fishing vessels

Starting Saturday, the Indonesian government will sink foreign ships conducting illegal, unreported and undocumented fishing operations along the country’s sea borders, a cabinet minister said Thursday. “We will take stern legal measures, including sinking the ships,”  Read the rest here 08:51
