NEFMC and MAFMC propose new bycatch reporting system for Northeast fisheries

NEFMC SidebarMAFMC SidebarThe Mid-Atlantic and New England fishery management councils jointly proposed the revision. They want the revision to apply to all 13 fishery management plans in the area. The proposal involves not only a standardized reporting and monitoring method, but also new procedures for observers, new set-asides and more. SOUTHWEST HARBOR: Drifting boat sparks harrowing high seas rescue

Combined efforts of lobstermen and a U.S. Coast Guard rescue crew brought the Northeast Harbor-based lobster boat Royal Fortune safely to port last month when its engine stalled off Great Duck Island in high seas. Purse seiner owner sounds alarm bell

Hiring in full swing at Samoa Tuna Processors

samoa tuna processorsSamoa Tuna Processors is not having problems hiring fish cleaners. STP is on target to open its cannery operations next month. Dan Sullivan, vice president of production at Tri Marine International , which owns STP, said they have advertised for fish cleaners and have received very good response with a large number of people interested in joining STP. Lower lobster catch in 2014 means higher prices

lb3707_01The 2014 lobster fishing season appears to have resulted in a lower total catch than the previous two years — meaning slightly higher prices for consumers — but it remained a productive year, lobstermen say. Maine’s lobster fishery, the largest in the country, topped 125 million pounds in 2012 and 2013. Read the rest here 11:12

Arrogance Ignorance and Greenpeace

Just in case you have not heard the story – here is a brief summary. In Peru at night a group of Greenpeace activists drove a jeep up to one of the ancient Nasca outlines then trampled over the area laying out a piece of Greenpeace propaganda. According to the outraged Peruvian government ( as well as assorted other experts) the group did irreparable damage to the area. 2 men from U.S. fishing vessel found swimming in open water

american victoryTwo missing men from an American fishing vessel positioned 10 nautical miles northwest of Apra Harbor were found this afternoon swimming in open water. The Coast Guard was originally told that crew aboard the vessel, American Victory, were swimming in the water while the boat was stationary and that the two men ended up unaccounted for, Putnam said. North Carolina Bluefin tuna season off to promising start
