Tignish fisherman continues fight with DFO over crab licence

Pregnant orca died of bacterial infection

Cottrell said the infection likely originated with the calf before spreading to the mother. He said the calf weighed 175 kilograms, and it was too soon to say whether the orca suffered long-term starvation. “With the calf dying in the womb, of course J-32 was in distress,” he said, adding it’s unlikely the mother fed for several days because of the infection and dead calf. Vinalhaven Me – Father, son swim to safety after lobster boat Midnight Rider goes up in flames

A father and son were forced to swim a few hundred yards to shore after a swiftly moving fire engulfed their vessel. David Anthony and son Blake Anthony were resting Tuesday afternoon after the ordeal. Vinalhaven Fire Chief Marc Candage said the two men were fortunate to have survived swimming a long distance in such cold waters. The water temperature was about 43 degrees on Tuesday. Coast Guard to present award to fishing vessel captain, crew

The media is invited to an award ceremony at Coast Guard Sector San Diego, Thursday, where the Coast Guard is scheduled to recognize a Point Loma fishing boat captain and his crew for their efforts in a rescue 1,500 miles off the coast of Hawaii. Gregory Virissimo, the captain of the fishing boat, and his crew discovered the fishing boat Fu Yuan Yu 065 on fire with 11 survivors in a life raft a few feet from the burning vessel, May 2, 2014.   Read the rest here 16:15

Presidential Task Force on Combating Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing and Seafood Fraud

The “recommendations for the implementation of a comprehensive framework of integrated programs to combat IUU fishing and seafood fraud that emphasizes areas of greatest need” have now been provided to the President through the National Ocean Council. California Air National Guard rescue’s 24 year old ill Fisherman 160 miles off the coast of Monterey

Fishermen Convicted of Improperly Harvesting Seals

Duncan Sharpe of Gander, Kevin Blackler of St. John’s, and Richard Worthman of Heart’s Delight were convicted for improperly harvesting seals in accordance with humane harvesting requirements under the Canadian federal Fisheries Act.  Read more here 07:46
