Historic Cortez Fishing Village continues work despite hurricane damage

The Cortez Fishing Village has weathered a lot, but Hurricanes Helene and Milton put them to the test. “I’ve seen other storms that hurt us in different ways, but this one hurt literally thousands and thousands of people,” said Kent Nixon, a stone crab fisherman who has been part of the Cortez Fishing Village for decades. Docks were damaged during Hurricane Helene and are now being replaced. Milton also damaged the roof of the A.P. Bell Fish Company’s fish house. Cortez Fishing Festival returns after pandemic cancellation last year

The Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival is back. The event was canceled last year due to the pandemic. This is a very important event for the commercial fishing industry. The festival runs Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It promotes the working fishing village that produces a lot of seafood people eat all over Florida. The Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival is one of the most popular and most successful events in the Bradenton area every year, attracting tens of thousands of visitors and raising lots of money for an organization that works to preserve the Cortez Fishing Village and the environmentally essential wetland nearby. It’s been so successful that they don’t feel compelled to tamper with its success. So this year’s 34th annual Cortez Commercial Fishing Festival will be pretty much like all the others — two days of fresh-from-the-boat seafood, live music from great Bradenton-area bands and tours and displays on local marine life and the commercial fishing industry.
