The boat belonging to a fisherman who fell overboard off the Coromandel Peninsula has been found.
Will Fransen, the owner of Betty Gee, was rescued on January 3 after spending nearly 24 hours in the water without a lifejacket. The boat was missing until today, when it was found at the Raukokore River mouth, south of Waihau Bay on East Cape. “The 12 metre long vessel was located today off East Cape. ” Fransen said he was hooked in a gimbal fishing harness with safety rails on the port and starboard side, which “enclosed” him, however he wasn’t wearing a lifejacket or Personal Locator Beacon when he was yanked off the boat while attempting to reel in a marlin. photos, more, >>click to read<< 12:54
Missing shrimper identified as La Feria resident
A missing shrimper last seen on South Padre Island has been identified as 35-year-old Christopher Vargas from La Feria. According to a release from the U.S. Coast Guard, Vargas fell from a shrimp trawler 35 miles off the coast of South Padre Island early Saturday morning. Vargas was last seen wearing a tank top and shorts. He was not wearing a life vest when he fell overboard. His aunt Leticia Vargas said it is uncertain what happened to Christopher. She said going offshore to catch shrimp was a traditional job for him. “This was his way of getting money for back to school, that’s what his wife was waiting for, that’s what the kids were waiting for, that’s what his intentions were for him to go out there, he’s been doing this for years,” she said. >Video, click to read< 07:00
Charter fishing crew reacts to saving overboard commercial fisherman’s life
A team of junior hockey players from Nashville and their dads went on a charter fishing tour with “New Beginning” early Sunday morning, when they spotted something strange. “I saw a gentleman waving,” passenger Ryan VanBuskirk said. “I said, ‘That’s a human out there!’ The United States Coast Guard said a commercial fishing boat captain fell overboard around midnight— with no life jacket. Coast Guard responds to man overboard of Commercial Fishing Vessel near Panama City, Fla
The Coast Guard responded to a report of a man overboard Sunday approximately 12 miles south of Panama City, Florida. Coast Guard Sector Mobile watchstanders received a notification at approximately 4 a.m. over VHF-FM channel 16 from a crewmember on the fishing vessel F/V Fiona Leone reporting that the captain of the vessel fell overboard while the vessel was on autopilot. The captain was in the water for more than four hours without a life jacket before the good Samaritan vessel New Beginnings rescued him. The Station Panama City boat crew convened with the New Beginnings and transferred the captain back to the Fiona Leone to safely navigate his vessel back into port. >click to read< 19:15
Commercial Fisherman survives after sleepwalking on boat, falling overboard
Rescuers said “a miracle of God” saved a fisherman who fell overboard into Southern California waters when he woke up in the middle of the night and began sleepwalking off the boat. Dylan Fogg expected a typical Thursday out at sea. He spoke exclusively with Eyewitness News on Friday and said he went to sleep aboard the F/V Crystal Bay, a commercial fishing boat, but woke up in the waters off Ventura. Bodega Bay crabbers head out to sea to retrieve fellow fisherman’s gear, aid his family after tragedy
The two skippers left dock before daylight, crawling through dense fog on an uncertain quest made all the more challenging by how little they could see beyond the bows of their fishing vessels. Commercial crabbers Tal Roseberry and Dick Ogg weren’t entirely sure where to look Wednesday as they worked off someone else’s personalized plotter. Skipper rescued by girlfriend on an air mattress after falling overboard off Sitka
A fishing boat reportedly departed Sitka’s Eliason Harbor northbound earlier in the morning, with the skipper at the wheel and the deckhand below asleep. Once clear of the breakwater, the skipper put the vessel on autopilot and stepped on deck to wash the windows. A few miles north of the harbor at Magic Island, the skipper’s girlfriend came down to the beach to wave. “His partner was waving him off on the beach there,” said Fire Chief Craig Warren, who responded to the accident. UPDATED: Gloucester Fisherman dies after falling overboard
Gloucester lost one of its fishing sons on Monday afternoon when 49-year-old Nicolo Vitale, a crewman aboard the Miss Sandy, went overboard as the vessel returned from fishing and later died at Addison Gilbert Hospital. The Coast Guard received a distress call from the Miss Sandy’s captain, Vince Taormina, that a crew member had gone into the water off the boat’s deck and could not be located. “He said he turned around and his crew member wasn’t there,” Gloucester fishing vessels Santo Pio, owned and captained by Joe Orlando, and the Angela + Rose, which is owned and captained by Paul Vitale, Nicolo Vitale’s cousin, joined the search. >click to read< 20:09
Stonington scallop boat crewman remembered for devotion to his daughter
When Charlie Lathrop was just 15, he quit school and began a 35-year career as a commercial fisherman, working out of ports from the Town Dock to Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Known for his devotion to his 13-year-old daughter, Catherine, his tattoos and his nickname “Charlie Tuna,” the 50-year-old Westerly resident died sometime Wednesday night when he fell overboard from the local scallop boat Invictus off the coast of New Jersey.,, Lt. Continuing search for P.E.I. fisherman to be done by drone
The search for a missing Island fisherman will be mainly done by drone from here on out, but there won’t be much activity today, RCMP said. Jordan Hicken went overboard while fishing out of Naufrage Harbour early last Tuesday morning. RCMP, coast guard and community volunteers have been searching ever since. Seaforth man who fell off fishing vessel remembered for his ‘irrepressible spirit’
A 58-year-old Seaforth, N.S., man who fell off a fishing boat late Thursday night, is being remembered for his dedication to saving wild animals and his “irrepressible spirit.” Reid Steward Patterson was swordfishing about 65 kilometres off the coast of Halifax when he fell into the water. An exhaustive search by air and sea lasted 23 hours, but searchers weren’t able to locate his body. On Friday night, Joint Task Force Atlantic handed the search over to the Halifax District RCMP. Woman Reported Missing in Lake Erie After Falling From a Fishing Boat
Pennsylvania State Police have issued search warrants as they are called in to assist in the case of a woman missing in Lake erie, after her husband reported she fell off a boat Sunday afternoon. She is identified as 51-year-old Karen LeClair of Albion. Her husband 48-year-old Christopher Leclair says it was the commercial fishing vessel he operates, the “Doris M.” that she fell from. According to Sgt. Brook Tolbert of the PA Fish and Boat Commission, Mrs. Leclair, a partner with her husband in a commercial fishing enterprise called, Lake Erie Fishing was not wearing a life vest. . “Mr. Leclair indicated that she was not wearing a life vest, there were plenty of life vests on board the vessel at the time, but she was not wearing it and she’s not required to wear it,” Video, click here to read the story 20:43
C.B. lobster fisherman Keith Stubbert remembered with fondness, sadness
Friends and family say Keith Stubbert loved being on the water and working for a living. Stubbert died Monday after falling overboard while lobster fishing southwest of Yarmouth. Close friend Sonja Francis of North Sydney said Stubbert went fishing off the South Shore every fall and spent about six months of the year at sea. “He was a hard worker and everybody loved him,” Francis said.
