BIG STORY: United States and China Coast Guards interdict vessel for illegally fishing on the high seas

JUNEAU, Alaska — The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau transferred custody of the fishing vessel Yin Yuan, a 191-foot fishing vessel seized 625 miles east of Tokyo, Japan in the North Pacific Ocean, for large-scale high seas drift net fishing, to the China coast guard vessel 2102 on Tuesday in the East China Sea. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) Announces Legislation Affecting Red Snapper, Gulf Fisheries

“The bill provides sufficient resources and direction to improve the management of our Nation’s fisheries, including new approaches to manage red snapper in the Gulf of Mexico,” said Shelby.  “These new approaches should provide a more equitable system for commercial fishermen and increase the number of fishing days for recreational anglers.” Read more here 16:15

Georgia waters opening to shrimping June 10

BRUNSWICK, GA. | Georgia will open its waters for the commercial and recreational netting of food shrimp at 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, the state said. That means commercial trawlers can operate in Georgia’s territorial waters to the three-mile limit and individuals can use beach seines and cast nets to catch shrimp in waters where the shrimping gears are allowed. Cape Wind farm opponents fight lawsuit dismissal

The lawsuit, which is the latest in a string of failed challenges to the project, claimed state regulators’ approval of an above-market contract to sell power from the project to NStar, which delivers power to Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and other parts of the state, violated two clauses of the U.S. Constitution: the Commerce Clause and the Supremacy Clause. Push is on to speed aid to fishermen
