Today: North Pacific council pursues halibut bycatch reductions
The action came after public testimony from directed fishers calling for a reduction in bycatch, and an Advisory Panel report that asked for emergency regulations. This year, the directed fishery took a significant cut to the quota in Areas 4CDE, and another cut will likely occur next year. Those quotas are set by the Interntional Pacific Halibut Commission, and are based on the stock status. The council, however, is responsible for halibut bycatch in other fisheries. 3 saved after clam boat F/V Miss Laurie catches fire on Housatonic – F/V Red Witch and others rush to the flame engulfed vessel
Kevin Jones-Santiago and the rest of the crew aboard the Red Witch were busy sorting clams for market in the Housatonic River on Saturday afternoon when suddenly they heard a pop. Another clamming boat a mile out, Miss Laurie was suddenly engulfed in flames five to 10 feet in the air. The crew quickly pulled up their dredges, picked up their hoses and Captain Timothy Griffith turned the boat around. Read more here 16:10
North Pacific council asks for analysis of salmon bycatch reductions – NPFMC Meeting continues, Listen Live
The North Pacific Fishery Management Council took a step toward considering salmon bycatch reductions in the Bering Sea today. The council initiated an analysis of a regulatory amendment package that includes five alternatives that could reduce chum and chinook bycatch in the Bering Sea pollock fishery. Read more here 14:24

Lunenburg town councillors take political dory challenge
The event was organized by the Lunenburg-based Canadian Dory Rowing Association. The association holds races next Saturday that will determine who represents Canada at the U.S.-hosted international races in Gloucester, Massachusetts, June 21. A second set of elimination races will be held on the waterfront Aug. 9 in preparation for the Canadian-hosted international races Aug. 23. Read more here 11:25

F/V “Miss Laurie” Commercial Fishing Boat Catches Fire On Housatonic – Details are sketchy
The three people were taken to Bridgeport Hospital, and the captain of the fishing boat suffered third-degree burns, the Coast Guard spokesman said.. Read more here 10:45
Parties mum on settlement to end salvage claim against drifting Spruce Head lobster boat
The case centers on the 42-foot lobster boat Xtreme Measures which broke from its mooring off Spruce Head during a blizzard in February 2013. Owner Jason Hooper had no luck finding the vessel but 10 days after it broke its mooring, the 76-foot long offshore lobster boat Amy Philbrick spotted it 150 miles out to sea. Read more here 08:32
