Cape Breton: millions of dollars of the crustacean being held in live storage, fishermen are expected to tie up boats
“I haven’t seen this happen before in my time. There is that many lobster that we can’t even get crates to hold them,” Kennedy said. “I’d say that for just myself, I’m probably sitting on about $1.7 million worth of lobster. I wouldn’t be shy to say there there is $10 to $12 million in lobsters floating right now in Cape Breton. Buyers have them bought, but can’t sell them.” Read more here 23:27

Coast Guard seizes 450 red snapper illegally caught off South Texas coast
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coast Guard interdicted a Mexican fishing crew poaching in South Texas waters, Sunday, 30 miles offshore and 70 miles north of the U.S./Mexican border. The lancha was initially discovered actively fishing without a legal permit and had caught 450 red snapper in U.S. waters. The red snapper were all dead and packed in ice. Read more here 14:50
Trawlers clean out coastal herring
CHATHAM — Like many who represent Cape and Islands fishermen, Alex Friedman, the president of the Dukes County Fishermen’s Association, started getting calls a week ago that eight large vessels, operating in pairs, were towing large nets the size of football fields between them and cleaning out the herring just a few miles east of Cape Cod. West coast sees decline in fishing fatalities, says TSB
Fatalities in British Columbia’s fishing sector have declined sharply over the past decade, according to new information from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB). Statistics from the board state that the west coast has seen an average of 2.33 deaths per year in its fishing industry since 2004 — a decline from 4.16 in previous years. Read more here 13:54
