Work to begin on fishermen memorial in Lubec

LUBEC, Maine — Work will begin on a memorial to honor Maine and Canadian fisherman who have been lost at sea, now that an initial fundraising goal has been reached, organizers announced. The entire project will cost roughly $230,000 to $250,000. Read more here  21:40

Distant Water Tuna Fleet – Higher risk of fatal injuries than in most other U.S. fishing fleets.

A NIOSH assessment of workplace hazards in the Distant Water Tuna Fleet found that workers in the fleet face a higher risk of fatal injuries than workers in most other U.S. fishing fleets. While falling overboard is the leading cause of death, NIOSH researchers also concluded that workers are at risk of head injuries, asphyxiation and amputations of fingers. Some local restaurant owners believe there’s something fishy about catches from Lake Erie

The advent of spring and summer means we can now look for perch, walleye and our other favorite Lake Erie fish on local restaurant menus. The world’s greatest sockeye fishery is spinning up for an exciting year

These are some of the questions on the minds of the Bristol Bay fishing industry, which is quickly pouring back into the hub towns of Dillingham and Naknek.
