Great whites plentiful off US west coast
Great white sharks are likely rising in numbers off the coast of California and are not at risk of extinction despite some reports to the contrary, US researchers say.By accounting for all life stages of sharks there, researchers found that their numbers were more likely around 2000, not 200. Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission opts to curtail receational, commercial fishing for smelt in Puget Sound
The state will curtail recreational and commercial smelt fishing in Puget Sound in hopes of increasing protection for the species. The commission also considered two other options: one making no change and the other closing commercial fishing and limiting recreational fishing. The commission also requested an annual review of the commercial and recreational smelt fisheries in the Sound. Read more here 17:06

Greenpeace Loses Millions, Blames Rogue Employee, Currency Hedge Gone Wrong
Greenpeace has suffered a 3.8 million-euro ($5.2 million) loss on an ill-timed bet in the currency market by a well-intentioned — if reckless — employee in its financial unit. The employee was fired for ignoring rules, not for the loss itself, which — although sizeable compared with donor contributions — amounts to a fraction of the organization’s annual revenues of around 300 million euros. Despite early start to Alaska king salmon runs, biologists not convinced slump is over
Alaska anglers optimistic about promising early king salmon returns on many rivers — after years of disappearing fish — may want to temper any warm, fuzzy feelings about the largest of the state’s salmon. While some waterways are seeing an increase in chinook salmon returns compared to last year, biologists stress it’s too early to say if the current numbers will be sustained the rest of the season. Giant sturgeon caught on Fraser river…again
On Thursday, Paul Jarvis, and his dad, Don, were on the first day of a three-day father-son fishing trip when Paul hooked into one of the largest white sturgeon ever caught on the Fraser River. The giant fish measured more than three-and-a half metres long and one-and-a-half metres in girth. Since it was never removed from the water, its weight was calculated, based on a mathematical formula, at 400 kilograms. Read more here 09:51

The trial of a cutting-edge type of trawl door has proved very effective off Nova Scotia.
The preliminary trial by a Canadian fishing vessel using PV3 trawl doors from Morgère resulted in a catch of nearly 40 tonnes of redfish. The Carmelle #6, which is based in Pubnico, Nova Scotia, achieved this catch over a four-day fishing period. Read more here 08:02
