Arrival of the new F/V Copious the ‘ultimate expression of confidence’

Lerwick’s jarl squad had just revealed its beautiful galley to the public for the first time on Tuesday morning when another, even more impressive, new build sailed into Lerwick Harbour for the first time. It took Mark Anderson and his crew 17 days to complete the journey from the Croatian Tehnomont shipyard to Lerwick’s Mair’s Quay. At 24.9 metres in length and fitted with a 588kw engine, both Copious and her sister vessel Prolific have been designed to be more eco-friendly and as such more economical. Designed by Macduff Ship Design, the two new vessels have a beam of nine metres and provide accommodation for up to 12 crew members. Fishing vessel Christina S launched

On the weekend of January 20-22, another fishing vessel was launched at Karstensen Shipyard Poland in Gdynia – this time it is a 77-meter pelagic trawler Christina S. Christina S was created in Karstensen for Christina S Fishing from Fraserburgh, Scotland. The process of launching Christina S was very complex and involved several stages. First, special carts on which the unit was located had to position it perpendicular to the quay. Grupo Arbumasa’s New Fresher Trawler

Huafeng 882 is the third of six trawlers ordered in 2021 by Dalian Huafeng Aquatic Products, part of Grupo Arbumasa. Earlier in 2022, Contessi launched the first two vessels, which have already been successfully fishing during the recent season. Like its sister vessels, Huafeng 882 is a 24-metre fresher trawler, designed to fish not only Argentine red shrimp but also the several other species outside the shrimp season. Huafeng 882 is a double-decked ship mostly made of steel, with an aluminium superstructure. A fresquero, it does not have freezing capacities, but it has an insulated fishroom, provided by Nautiplast, for landing catches fresh in ice, and a chiller supplied by PM Refrigeración. Sanford Goes for Green with Maaskant Order

New Zealand seafood company Sanford Limited has placed an order with Damen Shipbuilding Maaskant for the design and build of a new scampi vessel for operation in the Southern Ocean. This new vessel is expected to contribute to Sanford’s target of reducing the carbon footprint from its direct operations by 25% between 2020 and 2030. The construction of the diesel-electric vessel will take place at the Damen Maaskant yard in the Netherlands, with a delivery date in 2025. Images, >click to read< 20:29

Stepping up Crabber Fleet Renewal

The first crabber in a series of eight has been floated off at the Nakhodka Shipyard for Russian fishing giant Antey. The company hopes the new vessel will be an improvement than the one it took delivery of from Pella Shipyard. F/V Kapitan Khazan is designed for catching crab in the waters of the Bering, Barents and Okhotsk seas and has a carrying capacity of up to 120 tonnes of live crab in nine tanks with a total volume of 680m3. ‘We placed an order at the Nakhodka shipyard, one of the oldest plants in Primorye. It is important for us not only to renew the fleet and create comfortable conditions for seafarers but also to revive the traditionally strong shipbuilding industry in the Far East,’ Antey’s president Ivan Mikhnov said in a statement. Former Skippers New Fresher Trawler

Fresquero José Luciano will operate from Mar del Plata along the Patagonian coast, targeting not only Argentine red shrimp, but also hake and other species, landing fresh catches boxed in ice The newbuild replaces an older vessel owned by Luciano Ramaci, a former skipper from Mar de Plata. The steel-hulled, 27-metre José Luciano has an 8.40-meter beam. It is powered by a Caterpillar 3508 main engine and two auxiliary Cummins engines and is expected to have a maximum speed of 9.5 knots. Future-Proofed Trawler for Hvide Sande

Taking delivery of a new trawler capable of alternating shrimping and targeting flatfish, Hvide Sande fisherman Torben Johansen remains optimisti, but he has few kind words for the current crop of politicians and what he sees as a long list of unfulfilled promises. The back story is that six years ago he ordered a new trawler, Mikkel Louise, to be built at Vestværft. The handover took place in 2020, just as the Covid pandemic hit and although the trawler fished well, the crash in the restaurant sector meant that sales of shrimp and whitefish ground to a standstill. The upshot was that Mikkel Louise was sold to Dutch owners, and Torben Johansen placed an order for a smaller trawler at the same yard. Photos, >click to read< 12:10

New Build: Raising the Bar with Space and Comfort

The first impression is that there’s plenty of space on board, and Winter of Ladram really does have far more room to work and carry gear than any conventional crabber in the UK fleet. The working deck forward is enclosed under a shelterdeck that feels like a ballroom, with room to stack pots six high and a surprising amount of overhead height. Nobody’s going to have to worry about banging their head here. ‘This is a unique design and a new take on the south-west crabber, with much more security and comfort for the crew. New Scalloper/Trawler for Le Havre

With a length of 11.98 metres and a breadth of 6 metres, Pierre Becquet’s new fishing boat was launched on 13th July at Locmiquélic in Morbihan. It will be delivered in August to the port of Le Havre, where the owner already runs the P’tit Pierre (ex-Tigrou), built in 2005 by the same yard as P’tit Gabin, Chantiers Navals Bernard. Hull tipped over for fishing boat build

An important stage in the construction of a new $6 million fishing vessel in Nelson has been reached, with the boat’s hull lowered and turned over in the water. The longline vessel Te Runanga is being built for Westfleet by Nelson-based Aimex Service Group and on Friday the hull was lowered into Nelson Harbour so the next stage of the build can begin. The hull had been built upside down at Aimex’s workshop, and because of its weight, rolling it over on the water was the easiest way to turn it up the right way for the vessel build to be finished while it was in the water, Video, photos, >click to read< 08:47

A New Twin-Rigger for Fraserburgh Brothers

The 22.20 metre, 7.50 metre beam F/V Day Dawn replaces the 19 metre F/V Challenger that skipper Chaz Bruce and his brother Martin had been working since it was built at the same yard in 2010. Still in Fraserburgh, F/V Challenger is now F/V Harvest Moon. The brothers chose the Day Dawn name for their newbuild in memory of their father, as this was the name of his boat when they both started at sea with him. ‘The boat performed well, it was very quiet, generally really impressed and everything seems to have worked out well, very pleased with the new boat,’ Chaz Bruce said after bringing in the new trawler home from Whitby to take on the Faithlie Trawls fishing gear and Thyborøn trawl doors to carry out the first fishing trials. Canadian yard delivers a versatile fisheries vessel

The Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government, an indigenous Canadian community on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula, has accepted delivery of a new 19.81 by 7.31-meter (65 x24-foot) combination crab trap and groundfish trawler. The vessel was designed by NAVANEX and built by Chantier Naval Forillon, both of Gaspé, Quebec, Canada. Named Ugjit Mijua’ji’jg in the Mi’gmaw language, the name means “For Our Children”, a reference to the optimism that the community has for its continuing role in commercial fishery. This is the third vessel that Chantier Naval Forillon has built for the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Government and the most sophisticated. Wooden Hull Scalloper built in Paimpol

‘For me, a boat is made of wood. That’s what I prefer,’ said Normandy fisherman Lilian Guadebois, who has been skipper for eleven years. Sainte-Thérèse was launched in Paimpol at the end of January, after eighteen months of work. This 11.98 metre long, 6.55 metre beam shellfish vessel will be worked with a crew of four to fish for scallops in the Bay of Seine. To build this new vessel, which will be based in Honfleur (Calvados), the young skipper turned to Fabien Hémeury’s yard in Kerpalud. ‘The boat is made from 100% French oak because we want to support the local timber industry,’ said Fabien Hémeury, who works with a team of six carpenters. Aloncar Launches Largest Trawler in 40 Years

After two decades of inactivity, the Aloncar shipyard at Necochea in Argentina, has been resuming projects over the past five years, since engineer Hugo Obregozo became one of its owners. On 20th April, this new phase of activity resulted the launching of BP Skipper, a 28-metre fresher trawler entirely built by Aloncar. BP Skipper is entirely funded by its owner, the fishing company Ocean Fish. Its design was inspired on Norwegian and Icelandic vessels, with a double deck and an inverted bow, he explained. ‘Both of these features are not common in Argentina. The double deck allows the catch selection, washing and handling to be carried out under shelter. The inverted bow is especially important in rough sea conditions, as it reduces resistance and vessel movement, and makes it handle more efficiently,’ he said. photos, >click to read< 21:20

New crabber Valentia will add safety and comfort for fishing crew

Local skipper Richard Grains says he was pleased how his new crabber F/V ValentiaLK21 performed during her 800-mile journey from Valentia Island, in the southwest of Ireland, to Shetland last week. The new vessel arrived at the Vidlin marina for the naming ceremony at the weekend after successfully dodging Storm Dudley on her four-day journey home. Contessi Launches Fresher Trawler for Arbumasa

According to Domingo Contessi, F/V Huafeng 827 is much similar to the recently launched fresher F/V Antonia D, a multipurpose double-decked trawler with steel hull and aluminum superstructure. ‘But there are a few differences. Antonia D has electric winches, while Huafeng 827 has a hydraulic winch system,’ he said. The new trawler has two Berycar GPH-6L trawl winches, two net drums from the same supplier, plus a mooring winch. A Winning Combination

A change a few years ago in Norwegian regulations governing which fishing methods can be combined in a single vessel has opened the way for longline and seine net combinations – and the latest newbuild to bring these methods together has been delivered. F/V Østerfjord sailed from its builder in Turkey at the end of last year and at the beginning of January headed out from Ålesund for its first trials trip to test the 76,000-hook Mustad system before starting fishing on cod for real in the Barents Sea. A relative newcomer to the longline business but with a long background in pelagic fisheries, the Østervold family last year sold their previous F/V Østerfjord to the Faroes ahead of the new vessel’s completion. photos, >click to read< 11:07

Handsome Crabber Taking Shape at Gasp’ Yard

With the regulated catch quotas of contemporary fisheries, design versatility for a fishing vessel can be important. A new 19.81 by 7.31-metre combination crab trap and groundfish trawler designed by Navanex for building by Chantier Naval Forillon, both based in Gaspé, Quebec, is a clear example of this. Options open for solo and pair trawling – The latest delivery from Macduff Shipyards

Like its predecessor of the same name, the new F/V Fruitful Vine is designed to fish around Scotland, operating mainly solo, but with the opportunity to operate as part of a pair team opposite the family’s other trawler, F/V Steadfast Hope BF-340. There’s no better sign of a satisfied customer than one who returns for more business – and F/V Fruitful Vine’s predecessor was also a Macduff build, delivered in 2010. F/V Fruitful Vine’s hull is built entirely from steel, topped with an aluminium wheelhouse and masts. Macduff Shipyards has recently signed over its latest new build fishing vessel F/V Fruitful Vine to owners Nicol Fishing. This new build replaces its previous fishing vessel of the same name, which was built by the yard in 2010 and is intended to fish around the coast of Scotland, occasionally pair trawling alongside the family’s other fishing vessel, the Steadfast Hope. New trawler Linette makes a big difference

F/V Linette has been built for Alfred Fisker Hansen and Tommy Svart who had been looking forward for some time to upgrading to a new vessel, although this was delayed to the end of October. ‘We completed our first real fishing trip with new Linette, sailing on Saturday 6th November and landing in Thyborøn on Monday 15th November. Fifteen Month Build

‘It’s a huge difference compared to the old F/V Baldvin,’ skipper Arnar Óskarsson said, when the new trawler had left the storm behind and had a day’s steaming to go to dock in Keflavík. 15 metres longer than its predecessor and has an extra four metres of beam, F/V Baldvin Njálsson performed well on the way home, although the route back to Iceland involved taking a long detour out to sea to sidestep the heaviest weather. ‘We have even had the owner on board for the delivery trip. Macduff Shipyards completes first new build pair trawl order in more than 30 years

Macduff Shipyards has handed over two new fishing vessels Faithful (FR 129) and the Crystal River (FR 178) to their respective owners Stewart Buchan and David Cardno of Fraserburgh. These boats operate exclusively as a pair trawl team fishing out of their home port, and have the distinction of being the yards first new build pair trawl order in more than 30 years. New Trawler Delivered From Karstensens Shipyard

In March of 2019 a contract was signed between Mats Johansson, Vingaskär Fiskeri AB and Karstensens Shipyard A/S for the construction of a new 34.00 m Trawler. The finished ship was taken over by the Shipping Company on 15 June 2021 after some delay, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The new vessel is a state-of-the-art combi trawler, designed for fishing for both fish for human consumption and shrimp, with everything within the latest of machinery, equipment and equipment. New vessel is part of the Atlantic Dawn Group’s ambitious programme of fleet renewal

Built for the McHugh family in Killybegs, Ella G-233 is primarily a pelagic vessel with options for whitefish, and replaces Star of Hope. Ella has been delivered by Mooney Boats and has stylish lines, courtesy of its Vestværft design. At 24.47 metres and with an 8.10 metre beam, this compact pelagic catcher complements the company’s three new Salt-designed 64 metre vessels currently under construction. State of the art super trawler Mekhanik Sizov launched in Russia

The Admiralty Shipyards, located in St. Petersburg, have been the scene this Sunday of the launching ceremony of the super trawler of last generation Mekhanik Sizov. The ceremony, held during the day of Russian Navy Day, was attended by the country’s president, Vladimir Putin. Ships of this type measure 108 meters in length and 21 meters in beam. In addition, they have warehouses of 5,500 cubic meters. The ST-192 project ships reach a speed of 15 knots (almost 28 kilometers per hour), while their autonomy allows them to remain in the open sea for 45 days with a crew on board up to 139 members. photo, gif, >click to read< 13:21

New build Amanda of Ladram in Newlyn.

Waterdance’s latest vessel to join  their ever-expanding fleet is PW-6, the Amanda of Ladram, skippered by Jonathon Walsh. New fishing vessel boosts jobs in Nelson and West Coast

A $6 million longline fishing vessel will be built in Nelson and is set to create new jobs for the West Coast fishing industry. The 26-metre vessel F/V Te Runanga will provide up to 25 new jobs on the West Coast, and more during its construction Nelson.,, With a crew of up to eight, it will in effect create around 25 full time jobs collectively with the additional fish it brought to the factory.
