NEFMC Executive Director Tom Nies warns of deeper cod cuts if NOAA data holds

Some Md. lawmakers oppose seismic testing

Eight Democratic members of Maryland’s congressional delegation wrote President Obama Monday urging him to reconsider his administration’s plan to allow seismic testing for oil and gas off the mid-Atlantic coast. According to the Department of Interior’s estimates, they said, the use of air guns for testing would injure about 138,000 marine mammals and disrupt their feeding, calving, breeding and other activities. <Read more here> 20:12

55-year-old Fisherman medevaced from F/V John S. Dempster in Southern Chesapeake Bay

USCG-Birthday-300x174The Coast Guard medevaced a 55-year-old man Monday from a fishing boat in southern Chesapeake Bay. Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received a call from the operator of the fishing boat John S. Dempster at approximately 4:15 p.m., stating a crewman had suffered a seizure in the vicinity of Fisherman Island. <Read more here> 19:53

Marine experts have warned that rising sea temperatures are transforming the makeup of fish stocks in our coastal waters. Where cod and haddock once thrived, sea bass, hake, red mullet and anchovies are now being caught in rising numbers. North Carolina – New rules set for gill-net fishing

Gill-net fishermen have new requirements designed to protect an addition to the endangered species list. The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries recently signed an agreement with the National Marine Fisheries Service that implements a statewide incidental take permit for Atlantic sturgeon in the estuarine large-mesh and small-mesh anchored gill net fisheries. <Read more here> 13:50

F/V Paloma beached and breaking up on San Francisco’s Ocean Beach

shipwreckA 40-50 foot fishing boat was leaking fuel and spreading debris along San Francisco’s Ocean Beach early Monday after it beached in swallow water and was battering by pounding surf, authorities said. Meanwhile, a search was on for at least one person — believed to be Timothy Lybrand – who was on the boat. <Read more here> 11:19

New Orleans – Waters closed for over 4 years reopen to commercial, recreational fishing

Waters around Plaquemines, South Jefferson and Lafourche Parishes reopened to commercial and recreational fishing on Monday.  The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has re-opened a number of state inshore and Gulf of Mexico waters that were previously closed due to oiling from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. <Read more here> 10:10

Buddy Davis honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

It is difficult to say just how long 73-year-old William “Buddy” Davis has been in the shrimping business — it’s been a part of his life since the beginning.  At the Shrimp Ball on Aug. 2, Buddy, lifetime Sneads Ferry resident and founder of Davis Seafood, was to be awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for commercial fishing.  <Read more here> 09:45
