Forgotten no more

For the third year in a row, Portuguese sailors stood at in St. John’s for a man named Dionisiv Esteves and laid a wreath in his honour. Esteves was a member of the famous White Fleet. He died in 1966 while unloading his daily catch of cod from his dory. He was crushed between his little boat and that of the steel hull of the fishing vessel Santa Maria Manuela when his dory was swamped. Read more here 10:03

NC firm encourages Maine fishermen to sell invasive green crabs to be processed into cat food

kittyBay City Crab purchased two tractor-trailer loads — a total of 22,000 pounds — of crabs earlier this summer from Boothbay Harbor-area harvesters and processed them at their plant based in Aurora, North Carolina. The firm then shipped the crabmeat to a cat food company, plant manager Chrissy Fulcher said Friday. Read more here 09:22

Coast Guard medevacs 50-year-old fisherman from boat near Ocean City, Md.

The Coast Guard medevaced a 50-year-old man Saturday from the 73-foot fishing boat Dredge Monster approximately 45 miles east of Ocean City. Read more here  09:03

Fishermen lukewarm about disaster relief

Certain permit holders will be eligible for $32,500 in in the coming months. But some in the industry say the amount is a patch over a gaping wound. “I would be happy if they gave me back more fish. Maine’s scallop fishery to face more closures

Bureau of Reclamation to reconsider Trinity-Klamath releases for salmon

Following several meetings with North Coast tribes and government officials, the federal agency that oversees water in Northern California’s Klamath Basin is taking another look at releasing water from Trinity Lake to prevent the spread of disease among salmon returning to spawn in drought conditions.
