Feds face fisheries investigation – Organization to examine whether Ottawa is ignoring legislation
The initial submission was filed jointly by Environmental Defence Canada, the Natural Resources Defense Council in the U.S. and three private individuals. In it they cite studies that estimate four billion litres of contaminated water leaks from Alberta tailings ponds annually. Read more here 22:11
Illinois company latest to test market for carp

Brought by the boatload to this facility north of St. Louis, the Asian carp quickly meet a gruesome fate: They are ground to a bloody pulp in a maze of machines that churn their bony bodies into dehydrated meal and fish oil. Shaheen, Ayotte Welcome Distribution of Fishery Disaster Funds to New Hampshire Fishing Industry

Sad news today. Father of three identified as Vinalhaven lobsterman who died at sea
Lobsterman Jeremy Philbrook, 36, was the person who died off Vinalhaven. Philbrook was married to Keeley Philbrook and had three daughters ranging in ages from about 16 years old to younger than one, according to a former high school classmate. Rick Baumann writes, Is seismic testing, drilling for oil necessary?
From the letter: i.e. – our commercial fishermen have been and are being heavily regulated right now by the Precautionary Principle because conservative lawmakers won’t fund real time quantification of those resources. The “best available science” is way out of date – so precautionary regulations were put in place to protect the resources – even though little or no real time science existed to justify them. Why shouldn’t the same principle be applied when it comes to Atlantic drilling? Read more here 09:05
