EDITORIAL: A different kettle of …lobster
We’ve supported the idea of a two-cent-per-pound lobster levy since an independent panel recommended it last fall in a report on the fickle Maritime lobster fishery. We even suggested that the Nova Scotia government, in particular, should legislate the levy, even if it couldn’t reach a consensus with lobster fishermen across the province. Read more here 22:57
Ocean Wind Turbines Spell Doom For Commercial Fishing
Boston Swordfish & Tuna Fires Current Market Basket Management!
We are one of several suppliers of fresh seafood to Market Basket- possibly the largest. We provide a variety of wild items typically found in retail markets throughout New England, including Cod, Haddock, Scallops, swordfish and tuna. The largest volume we provide is farmed Atlantic salmon from Norway- over 30,000 pounds per week. All those marine mammals you get crucified over are going to get pounded to death, and your fish will take a big hit. Read more here, and blast some letters out. 15:47

Broken Teeth And Fake-umentaries: Another Shark Week Gone By
A great white attacks a submersible “SharkCam” deployed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, shattering its teeth on the metal bite-proof cylinder. Off Baja California, the crew of a research boat feeds a single great white 400 pounds of tuna in a boyish science test to see how much one shark can eat,,, Read more here 12:51
Commercial fishermen seek to halt recreational angling?
You think the differences between commercial fishing groups and recreational anglers has been heated in the past? Well … consider this just in from the “you aren’t going to believe this” file. In the comment section: I’d care to bet the use of long line commercial and net techniques vastly outweigh the stray rec hook & line incident. These clowns are simply trying to divert attention away from an obvious fact: commercial netting is the #1 way to overfish any fish population. I can’t believe it! Read more here 08:49
What it means to be a Newfoundlander is quickly changing
Traditional Newfoundland – a world of isolated, tightly knit communities that relied on the fishery and each other for survival – is still at the heart of our conception of ourselves, of how we present ourselves to the world. Read more here 07:37
