Kodiak – Coast Guard medevacs ailing F/V Sierra Seas fisherman

uscg-logoThe Coast Guard medevaced an ailing 69-year-old man from the 50-foot fishing vessel Sierra Seas near Village Islands off Kodiak, Sunday. An Air Station Kodiak MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew landed on a nearby beach where the mariner and his wife were picked up for transport to awaiting emergency medical services in Kodiak. <Read more here>  21:02

In Togiak, illegal fishing prompts concerns about escapement

RALEIGH NC: Observer funds, JEA clear state legislature

The legislature is pushing forward with a budget that will create a new fund for an At-Sea Observer Program for commercial fisheries and allow the state Division of Marine Fisheries to make a joint enforcement agreement with the National Marine Fisheries Service.   While a commercial fishing organization first proposed the fund,  a joint agreement between state and federal fishery agencies.  <Read more here> 11:03

Recreational crabbers are not playing by the rules

Abiding by the rules is a mantra we follow in our day-to-day lives, but in the past two weeks, hundreds of crabbers have not. That is the word coming out of state Fish and Wildlife enforcement, which has confiscated hundreds of Dungeness crab pots on days when fishing is closed (Tuesday and Wednesday) in most areas of Puget Sound and Hood Canal. <Read more here> 10:20

Speaking of Whales! – Photos – Polar bear wins tug of war with Nunavut man over beluga

Peter Kaludjak of Arviat, Nunavut, caught a beluga whale in Hudson Bay this week, only to have a polar bear also take an interest in it. Kaludjak and his hunting partner caught the beluga whale about 120 kilometres from the community. A polar bear spotted them, swam over and began a tug of war over the whale. Bloated whale carcass beached in Lamaline – I don’t see any fishing gear on it!

A dead whale has washed up near the shore in Lamaline, a small town on Newfoundland’s Burin Peninsula. The whale, which appears to be a humpback, could be seen Saturday washed up in a shallow rocky area. <Read more here> 09:10
